WHlFFLETREE-HOOKQ SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 369,110 dated August 30, 1887.
Application filed May 7, 1887. Serial No; 237,457. (No 'model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON HAWXHURST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful ImprovementinWhiffletree-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in, whiffletree-hooks; and it consists in the con- .struction and arrangement of the parts of the same, which will be more fully hereinafter de scribed, and pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel form of whiflletreehook or trace-lock. I attain this object by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of referenceindicate similar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional View of a portion of a whii'iletree, showing a section of the trace attached to the retaining-iron thereof, and with my improved whiflietree-hook, shown in section, in connection therewith and in a locked position in full lines and an unlocked position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved whiflietree-hook, detached from the whiifletree.
Aindicates awhiffletree, having the ordinary form of iron,a,inserted in the end thereof, over which the trace B is adapted to be placed, as in the ordinary form and well known in the art. A metallic plate, 0, is secured to the whiifletreeAin such a manner as to bring the ears 0 0, formed integrally therewith, in the rear portion of the said whiffletree. An angular locking arm, D, is'pivotally mounted between the ears 0' G by means of apin, d, passing through said ears and through one end of the said lockingarin D. The outer end of the locking-arm D, which is formed at right angles to the main body of the arm, is adapted to engage with the recess formed in the outer end of the whiftletree-iron a, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. A rib, d, is formed with this portion of the arm D, and when in a-locking position, as shown in Fig. 1, it forms a projection, against which the trace B will impinge in case the said trace will be caused to slip to one side toward the outer end of the whiffletree-iron a. By this means it will be seen that the trace is prevented from striking the lower end of the lever, and thereby prevents a forced disengagement thereof from the whiffletree-iron a. The inner end of the arm I), at the rear thereof, is formed with an upward bevel, d which engages with an obtuse angular projection, e, integrally formed with a spring-plate, E, which is secured to the bottom of the plate 0 between the ears 0 C. This spring E is constructed with a portion thereof in the same plane as the plate 0 and a portion, 6, extending upwardly at an obtuse angle therefrom. The inner beveled end, d, of the arm D, which bears against the spring E, is constructed to conform with the obtuse angular configuration e of the spring E, and when the said arm is in a locked position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the obtuse angular portion of the spring E bears against the beveled end of the arm D and retains it in its locked position. WVhen the said arm D is raised, as shown in dotted lines, the angular projection of the'said spring E is pressed down in the direction of the plate 0,- and if the said arm isreleased it will be caused to fly back in a locked position by the resilient effort of the said spring brought to bear upon the end of the said arm. Thus it will be seen that the normal position of the arm D is in contact with the whiffletree-iron a, and that it cannot be disengaged from said contact in any other manner than by the force brought to bear thereupon in releasing the trace.
The novelty, utility, and adaptability of my improved attachment are apparent, and need not be further enlarged upon herein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim As an improved article of manufacture, a
'whiiflet-ree'lock consisting of van angularlyformed locking-arm, having a rib constructed with the inner side of its angular locking por-- tion, and a bevel portion, d, with its rear end, the plate C, having ears 0, in which said arm is pivot-ally mounted, and the flat spring E, having the rear upwardly-projecting inclined portion, 0, bearing against the rear of the arm and adapted to retain it in a locked position, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WASHINGTON IIAWXIIURST. Witnesses:
