It is to be understood that the hangerper se forms no art of the present invention, but the device is equally applicable to difierent forms of garment hangers and may also be employed 'upon a wire or line.

It is not unusual in cleaning and pressing to employ a wire or line stretched across the room on which to suspend garments. The present spreader or 1 protector may be engaged with such clothes line or wire with equal facility and will serve the same purpose of preventing close folding and creasing-of the garments.

The protector or spreader forming the subject matter hereof comprises a section 3 of flexible sheet material bent into inverted channel sha e and suspended over the cross member 2 oi the hanger 1. The preferable material, because of its cheapness and ease of manipulation, is cardboard or manila tag board, although other materials, such as fiber, impregnated or stifiened fabric or even sheet metal may be employed. The hanger protector or 5 reader is provided with terminal heads or aps a formed integral with the main section 3, and folded transversely beneath the cross member 2 of the ban er to close the ends of the channel shape bent body 3. These terminal heads 4 each carry a locking tongue 5 engageable in a slot 6 suitably located in the side of the channel shaped bentbodyj3 to retain the body in its adjusted bent position. The main portion 3 is provided with projecting tongues at its opposite ends, notched at 7 to receive the stems or base angles of the wire hanger 1. The top margins erably notched at 8 to accomodate the cross member 2 of the hanger 1. The spreader or protector, although limited to the width of the terminal head or end flap 4 at its extremities, spreads considerably wider than at such terminal heads at its medial portion, due to the sheet material.

From the above description it will be apparent that there is thus provided a construction of the character described, possessing the particular features of advantage before enumerat'ed as desirable, but which obviously is susceptible of modification portions, and arrangement of parts, without de aring from the principle involved or sacri cin any of its advantages.

While in order to comply with the statute the invention is described in language more or less specific as to structural features it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown, but that the means and construction herein disclosed comprise the preferrcd form of several modes of putting the invention into eiiect, and the invention is therefore claimed in any of its forms or modifications within the legitimate and valid scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my. invention I claim:

1. As an articleof manufacture, a garment spreader comprising an inverted channel shaped member of sheet material having a rounded cross sectional contour, and terminal spreader heads in said member, a conventional wire garment hanger being engageable within said inverted channel member which encloses the cross member of the hanger to prevent close folding and creasing of a garment suspended thereon. I

As an article of manufacture, a garment spreader comprising a sheet of flexible material including a main section to be reversed upon itself to rounded channel shape, an integral head section at each end of the main section 'foldable to transverse position relative to the reversed main portion. and a tongue attached to the free margin of each head section for engagement in a suitably located slot in the main portion to hold said spreader in assembled relation, the spreader being engageable with the cross member of a garmenthanger to prevent close foiding and creating oha garment suspended thereon.

3. A garment spreader comprising an elongated portion of flexible sheet material to be Conin its form, probent u on itself into' tensioned inverted rounde channel shape for suspension over the cross member of a garment hanger, and means for maintaining the portion of material in its bent form, and notched tongues projecting from the p osite ends thereof in the notches of which the garment hanger is engageable.

4. A garment spreader comprising an elonm gated portion of flexible sheet material to be ent upon itself into tensioned inverted rounded channel shape for suspension over the cross member of a garment hanger, means for maintaining the portion of material in its bent form, and end flaps carried thereby engageable beneath the cross member of the hanger over which the bent portion is suspen ed.

5. A garment spreader comprising an elon- 2b ated portion of flexible sheet material to be H nt 11 on itself into tensioned inverted rounded channel shape for suspension over the cross member of a garment hanger, and flaps carried thereby engageable beneath the cross member of the hanger upon which the bent portion is suspended, and terminal tongues on said bent portion overhanging the end flaps.

6. A garment spreader comprising an elon- 'ated portion of flexible sheet material to be ent upon itself into inverted rounded channel shape for suspension over the cross member of a garment hanger, said bent portion having terminal notches therein for engagement with the garment hanger, and flaps carried by the bent portion to be transversely disposed in assembly of the spreader, also notched for engagement with the hanger.
