ISAAC APPELBAUM, or PHILADELPHIA, rnNnsYLvANIA.
FOLDING CONTAINER.
Application filed April 13, 1927. Serial No. 183,366.
My invention relates to a novel construction of a folding container whereina suitable blank is first prepared and provided with parallel. longitudinal and transverse creases whereby relatively wide side inclosing flaps are formed, and provision is made for enabling the blank after said side flaps have been infolded to be bent to form a suitable container which is especially adapted for containing ladies or other apparel and the like.
Myinvention further consists in providing a novel blank of the above character with a hanger device, such as a transverse cord, wire, or the like, and a transverse retaining strip of pasteboard, paper, cloth or other material, whereby the lower portion of the garment will be kept neatly folded and in a compact and fined position after its insertion into the container.
It further consists in providing a blank 1 of the above character with slots within its ends through which the users fingers may be inserted, whereby the necessity for integral endhandles is dispensed with.
It further consists in providing a blank ofthe aforesaid character with locking tabs which are adapted to be folded over a por time of "the blank, and to be interlocked therewith. i
it further consists of other novel features of construction and advantage, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
For the purpose of illustrating niy invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since it will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, al though it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not lin ited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrulnentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a blank embodying my invention from which my novel container is constructed.
Figure 2 represents a perspective view of the blank seen in Figure 1 in partly folded condition.
Figure 3 represents a side elevation of the container in folded and locked position.
Figure l represents a vertical section on the line l4: Figure 3.
Figural) is a perspective view of a modification. i
Similar numerals of rei'terence indicate corresponding parts in the figures. Refer ring to the drawings,
1 designates my. novel construction of blank which is madeof paper, pasteboard, or similar cheap and inexpensive material, said blank being preferably rectangular in contour but the form and shape of the same may be changed according to requirements. 2 and 8 represent longitudinally extending creases or scorings whereby the flaps 4 and 5 respectively are formed which flaps are preferably relatively wide and when folded on the lines 2 and S as seen in Figure 2leave a space or about one inch between their j11X- taposed edges 6 and 7 respectively.
8 and 9 designate two transverse creases or scorings on which the blank is folded, as will be understood from Figure 2, so as to form the container. 10 designates a piece of string, cord or the like having its ends secured to the blank at the point 11 'by any suitable clinching, fastening or stapling means. 12 designates a transverse strip of paper, pasteboard, cloth or the like which extends substantially the entire distance between the creases 2 and 3 and has its ends secured to the blank body by eyelets, staples or other fastening devices as indicated at 13.
'14v and 15 designate oppositely located slots 1 which serve as finger holes, it beingapparcut that when the blank is folded said slots align, as will be understood from Figures 3 and 4t.
16 designates T shaped tabs which are preferably integral with the right hand edge of the blank seen in Figure 1, and are provided with the terminals 17 which are adapted to be tucked into or interlocked with the oppositely located cuts 18. The relative position of the tabs 16, the transverse hanger 10, the retaining strip 12, the handle holes 14 and 15- and the cuts 18,will be readily apparent from Figure 1. 19 designates a dress or other article of womens ormens apparel, showing the manner of retaining the same within the container, as will be understood from Figure 2, said article of apparel being hung upon the hanger 10 and tucked under the transverse strip 12, whereby it will be kept in position at all timesit will be apparent that my device can be used as a carrier for any desired article when the same 1s in the folded condition,
as seen in Figures 3 and 4:, or if desired the container withthe flaps land 5 folded, as seen in Figure 2 can be suspended by one or both the slots'la in a closetvor apartment, and the pods or articles of apparel allowed to remain therein until used, and if de sired, the blank 1 can be impregnated with any suitable germicide which will keep.
moths from attacking the garment 19, said olank being formed of paper or pasteboard which is tarred or impregnated with any suitable material. which is offensive to moths, insects or other vermin.
My novel device is especially adapted for department stores, cleaners and dyers establishments and the like, and can be cheaply manufactured and readily folded in the operative position" by the user in a few seconds.
It will be apparent that when it is desired for the goods as a dress 19 to be retained within the container, the latter can be suspended unfolded in a closet by the engagement of the upper slot 14 with a hook or nail, the dress or other article of apparel being thus prevented from being soiled, since the flaps 4 and 5 substantially inclose the same. y y
In the construction seen in Figure 5, I have shown in lieuof the slots 14: and 15 a construction wherein I simply employ finger holesQO, it being understood that the slots 14: and 153 seen in Figure 2 may be replaced by said finger holes; a a
In the construction seenin Figure 5, the flaps 4 and 5 may be slightly smaller than seen in the other figures. a
It will now be apparent that I have devised a: novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enurner ated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the. above description, and while I have shown in the present instance and. described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and; reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is suscepttaining strip extending in parallelism trans versely of said blank, and locking de- Hit vices on one end of said blank adapted to engage recesses in the opposite end of said blank, the latter being provided with finger holes at each end which align with each other when the blank is folded, said finger holes being within the outer ends of said blank. v
2. A folding container composed of a body portion having inwardly folded rela-v tively wide side flaps, a transverse hanger comprising a strip of material having its ends secured to the blank, and a retaining strip for retannng the lower ends of the articles supported 1n a folded condition, a
pair of aligning finger holes in the opposite juxtaposed sides of the container, and 1ocking devices on one end of said container adapted to fold over the opposite end of the container and to be interlocked therewith. Y
3. The herein describedblank for econtainer having a pair of transverselyextend- 111g creases and a pair of longitudinally extending creases whereby relativelywide side flaps are formed, a hanger and a retaining strip extending in parallelism transversely of said blank, the latter being provided with finger holes at each end which align with each other when the blank is folded, said finger holes being within the. outer ends of said blanks;
