6 Claims. (Cl. 223-98) This invention relates to a garment hanger cover.

It is an object of my invention to provide a garment hanger cover which is adapted to be attached to substantially any garment hanger now in commercial use to provide support for the shoulders of a garment and prevent wrinkling of the garment or unsightly hanger creases. My garment hanger cover may be formedof cardboard, textiles, plastic or metal, as later more fully set forth.

It is a further object of my invention to provide such a cover which in one embodiment of my invention is adapted to be manufactured at an extremely low price from a single piece of commonly available economical material such as cardboard, which is adapted to be easily and quickly attached to any conventional hanger and which provides space for advertising. My cover is thus adaptable for use by dry cleaning establishments, garment manufacturers and similar large quantity commercial users.

It is also an object of my invention to provide a cover which in another embodiment of my invention is preferably made of textile material and is adapted to be carried by the user in a fiat, compact form and quickly and easily attached to or detached from the hangers furnished by hotels and lodging places.

My invention also comprises such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.

While I have shown in the accompanying drawing-s preferred embodiments of my invention, it should be understood that the same are susceptible of modification and change Without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Referring to the drawings, Fig. l is a side elevational view of a cardboard embodiment of my,garment hanger cover in use;

One embodiment which has been selected to illustrate my invention comprises a blank it! which is preferably formed of cardboard, although other suitable materials may also be used. The blank 1%? may be described as having an hour-glass shape, with the ends 11 and 12 being straight and the

13 and 14 being concave, curving inwardly from the ends to provide a narrow portion adjacent the longitudinal center of the blank. The four corners 15 of the blank are rounded. If the blank 10 isformed of cardboard, the grain of the cardboard should preferably extend lengthwise along the blank.

The blank 10. is provided adjacent its center with a hexagonal opening 16 which extends lengthwise of the blank 10, having narrow opposite ends 17 and being wider at its center than adjacent the ends 17.

18 and 19, which extend from opening 16 to the

13 and 14 on a line which bisects blank 10. A second pair of creases 2i) and 21 extends at an acute angle with respect to

18 and 19 on opposite sides of opening 16. These creases 20 and 21 are used when my cover is attached to a plastic or wood hanger. A third pair of

creases

22 and 23 extends at a less acute angle with respect to creases 18 and l? on the opposite sides of opening 16. These

creases

22 and 23 are used when my cover is attached to a wire hanger.

In use, my blank can be shipped, packaged and stored in a completely flat condition or when folded along

creases

18 and 1?. When ready for use, the opening 16 is placed over the hook of a hanger with the blank 10 disposed so that it extends substantially parallel to the hanger. The center portions of the blank are then brought together beneath opening 16 by folding the blank .along creases l8 and it? and one pair of creases 2i) and 21 or 22 and 23. The two sets of creases are provided to accommodate different shapes of hangers, as previously set forth. The folding of blank 11; should be. such that the creases l3 and 19 are at the bottom of the fold. This will provide a line which extends along the second set of creases substantially perpendicular to opening 16 and on a line which is vertical when the hanger is in use.

The two sides of blank iii are then attached together by means of a staple 2 which extends through all of the layers of the blank 16 along a line which is transverse to the vertical crease. When this is done, the opening 16 assumes a substantially rectangular shape which surrounds the upper part of the hanger beneath the hook. opposite sides of the blank and the two sides of the blank are joined together by the staple 24 beneath the hook portion of the hanger.

The opposite halves of the blank 1% extend downwardly and outwardly from the hook of the hanger on a line substantially parallel to the arms of the hanger; They are narrowest adjacent the hook of the hanger and have an increasing flare extending outwardly toward their ends.

When a garment is placed on the hanger, the blank 10 provides shoulder support which prevents wrinkling of the garment or creasing of the garment by the hanger. if the garment is heavy, such as a top coat, two covers may be used It may be noted that my cover will fit conventional wood hangers, plastic hangers, wire hangers and hangers of the type used by garment manufacturers.

This embodiment of my invention may be modified as desired by forming the blank 1%} of plastic or other suitable material and by providing alternative folding and fastening means adjacent the center of the blank, such as using adhesive tape, heat sealing or other suitble fastening means. Metal foil paper may also be used to form the blank 10, if desired. The blank 16 can be opaque, transparent or translucent.

Another embodiment of my invention is formed of two outer layers 3% of textile material which may be cotton, silk, rayon, velvet or any other suitable material. The shape of the cover is substantially the same as that previously described. Disposed between the outer layers 30 is a pad 31, which is formed of cotton or other suit able padding material. Disposed within pad 31 adjacent The creases extend directly downwardly on each end thereof is an insert which preferably comprises a vinylite plastic triangle 32; Suitable stitching 33 extends around the edges of the plastic triangle 32 to hold them in place within pad 31.

The outer layers 30 are stitched together around their entire edges by stitching 33. The opposite sides of the cover can be attached together by means of snap fasteners. mounted on shortloops of cloth tape 35. The .ends of the loops of tape 35 are held by the stitching 3310 hold the fastener halves 34 in place. The fastener'halves 34 are disposed so that matchinghalves for three pairs of fasteners are provided, one pair being adjacent the center of the cover and one pair adjacent each end of the cover. 1 V V Extending through the center of the cover is an opening 36, 'which'extends through the complete cover. Opening 36 is bordered with a metal eyelet'37 or with a machine worked cloth eyelet.

In use, the hook of the hanger is inserted through 7 opening 36. The matching pairs of snap fastener halves 34 are attached together and the cover is then securely mounted on the hanger. The plastic triangles 32 provide the necessary flare and strength adjacent the ends of the cover to provide the proper shoulder support for the garment. V v V a A more feminine version of this embodiment of my invention is, provided by replacing the center pair of snap fastener halves with two strands of ribbon 38, which are held at one end by stitching 33. A sachet holder 39 holds a removable sachet. One side of the cover is closed by snap fasteners 40'so that the inner pad 31 can be removed. The outside of the cover is suitably embroidered'or decorated,

A garment hanger cover comprising a blank having a substantially hour-glass shape, with its ends being substantially straight and its side edges curving inwardly from said ends to provide a narrow port-ion adjacent the longitudinal center of the blank, said blank comprising outer layers of textile material, a pad disposed between said layers, a pair of inserts comprising substantially triangular pieces of plastic substantiallystiflfer than said textile material, one of said inserts being disposed within each end of said pad, with the bases of the triangles extending along the ends of the pad and the apices of the triangles pointing toward the center of the pad, said inserts being held in position by triangular stitching extend ing around each insert and through said pad, said outer layers being stitched together around the edges of said tached to a hanger so that the book of the hanger extends through said opening, said matching snap iiastener'ha'lves adapted to be attached together to mount said cover'on a hanger so that the upper part of opposite longitudinal halves of said cover extend parallel to the arms of the hanger and said plastic inserts cause said cover halves to flare outwardly toward their ends to provide shoulder support for a garment mounted on the hanger.
