Description
March 10, 1931' A. CARO POCKET REST Filed Oct. 26, 1928 Inventor Q U I .flbmlz/azll/ t'aro ill I Patented Mar. 10, 1931 "UNITED" STATES FFHCE ABRAHAM CAIRO, on DORCI-IESTER, MAssAoH sET s, 'Asslenon TO THE HonToN '& HUBBARD MFG. 00., OF EAST SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION or MAINE POCKET" REST j T Application filed October 26, 1928. Serial No. 315,145.
The device of the present invention is a support or rest for the hinged pocket flap or cover of a suitcase, trunk, or like article of baggagewhen the flap or cover is closed over the pocket and functions to prevent the free edge of the flap or cover from swinging down into the pocket in its closing movement as particular features of novelty are pointed out.
in the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a fragmentary section through a suitcase or similar article of luggage equipped with a device insaccordance with my invention.
pocket covering flap being shown in closed position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section through one of my cover rests.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged face view thereof, and
Figs. 5 and 6 are detached perspective views thereof.
For the purposes of this application, I have shown my invention in its adaptation to a suitcase of the type wherein a pocket or compartment 1 is formed in its hinged cover section 2, the body of the suitcase being fragmentarily indicated at 3, and the hinged pocket cover or flap at 4. This illustration, however, is purely for purposes of disclosure and in no way limiting, as it will be understood that the principles of my invention may be applied to any article of luggage wherein J a pocket is provided in the article which ar- Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of Fig. 1, the 7 ticle is adapted to be covered by a hinged my flap or closure.
' The flapor cover 4 is hinged as by a flexible hinge 5 to the innerjwall 6 of the pocket forming'portion of the article of luggage and is supported at its free end by one or'more rests? mounted on the inner face of the outer wall 8 ofthepocket forming member. In
the illustrative embodiment shownthe walls 6 and 8 are the longitudinal walls of the cover member 20f the suitcase and the rests 7, of which two are shown in these drawings, serve as stops ,to prevent the flap 4, when closefd, from swinging down into the pocket itsel w .Eachrest 7 is formed as a relatively elongated-attaching. portion 9 of generally channeled form terminating at its upper end in an inwardly'extending horizontally disposed rest portion 10 which functions as a stop for the free edge of the flap 4. Preferably, the
The channeledconstruction of the rest? provides with the wall 8 a vertically disposed recess indicated generally at 13 for the reception of a flap fastening tab 14. The tab 14 is fastened in said recess 13 and to the wall 8 by the rivet 15 which rivet also assists in anchoring the rest 7 to the wall 8. The free end of the tab 14 may be provided with any suitable socket fastener lfiadapted' to engage a stud 17 carried by the upper face of the flap 4-whereby detachably to fasten the flap 4 in closed position as appears in Fig. 2.
By this construction, the fiap is not only prevented from swinging down into the pocket when closed, but'the stops or rests for the flap valso serve as a convenient meansfor mounting the fasteningtabs 14 for the flap on the wall 8. r H
Various structural modifications may obviously be resorted to within the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described adapted for use with an article of baggage having a pocket and a movable closure for said pocket, comprising a member mounted on one of the pocket-defining walls of the article of bag and presenting a stop portion disposed in interfering relation to the free edge of the pocket closure when said closure ismoved to closed position, said member shaped to provide with the pocket-defining wall on which it is mounted an open-ended recess, and a fastening tab anchored in said recess at one end and providedat its free end with means adapted for quick detachable connection with the pocket closure when closed whereby to permitsaid closure to be detachably fastened in closed position.
2. A device adapted for use with an article of luggage having a pocket and a cover movable relative to said pocket, comprising a member mounted on the innerface of one of the pocket defining walls and presenting an offset stop or rest disposed in interfering relation to the free edge of the pocket cover when said cover is moved to closed position, said member being of channeled form and defining with the pocket forming wall on which it is mounted an open-ended recess, and a fastening tab anchored in said recess and provided in its free end with means adapted for quick detachable engagement with the pocket cover when closed whereby to permit said cover to be detachably fastened in closed position.
3. A device adapted for use with an article of luggage having a pocket; and a cover movable relative to said pocket, comprising a vertiher being of channeled form and provided with one or more barbs along its lateral edges bymeans of which it may be anchored to the wall of the pocket and defining with such wall a vertically disposed recess, and a fastening tab anchored insaid recess and provided in its free end with means adapted for quick detachable engagement with the pocket cover when closed whereby to permit said cover to be detachably fastened in closed position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
' ABRAHAM CARO.
