This invention. relates, generally, to improvements in the hook elements of hook and eye fasteners; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to an improved con- 5 struotion of hook fastener for general use and for use in connection with fastener tape such as issupplied for application to womens garments.
In the manufacture of womens garments, and especially of womens undergarments such as brassieres and the like, there has come into very general use a form of hook and eye fastener tape which may be sewn directly to the meeting edges of a garment opening; fastener tape of this kind being known as eye tape and hook tape. In certain types of hook tape, a body strip is provided having, along a longitudinal edge thereof, a cover strip, either integrally formed therewith or stitched thereto, and interrupted at spaced intervals .to permit the operative extension or projection of the bill portions of the hook elements. In this tape, the hook elements are ordinarily formed of wire to provide laterally and oppositely directed base wings extending from each side of the medial shank portions from which the hook bill portions project, and'the base portions are overlaid upon the body strip and covered by the cover strip of the tape material, with the forward shoulders or said bare portions abutting the juncture of body and cover strip and stopped thereby so as to retain the hook element in place and sustain the same against outward pulling stresses exerted thereon when in use and operatively engaged with a cooperating eye element of an opposed eye tape; As heretofore made and used, the base portions of the hook elements, when assembled in connection with hook tape material in the manner above mentioned, would tend under outward pulling strains to collapse one upon the other, thus so deforming the said base portions and the abutting shoulders thereof, as to cause the same to tear the material at the juncture of body andcover strip, and so as to be eventually torn out of and away from the tape material. It is the principal object of the instant invention to provide therefore, a novel construction of hook element provided with means to Serial No. 319,228.
Other objects of this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan'view, with parts broken away, of meeting edge portions of a garment equipped with hook and eye fastener tape, the hook tape part of which is provided with hook elements made according to and embodying the principles of this invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of a hook element embodying the invention; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 33 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 44; Fig. 5 is a transverse section similar to that shown in Fig. 4 but illustrating a modified construction; Fig. 6 is a'horizon-tal section similar to that of Fig. 3, but illustrating a modified construction; Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary cross section, taken on line 7-7 in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is another horizontal section similar to that of Fig. 3, but illustrating a further modified construction; Fig. 9 is an enlarged fragmentary cross section, taken on line 99 in Fig. 8; and Fig. 10 is a view on a smaller scale similar to that shown in Fig. 1 but illustrating hook tape having the ordinary form of hook elements to disclose the tendency of the same to collapse which it is the object of this invention to avoid.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the. drawings, the reference character 11 indicates one marginal portion of a garment opening upon which is secured by stitching a hook fastener tape comprising a body strip 12 and a cover strip 13 between which strips are disposed the base portions of hook elements so that the hook bills project exteriorly through openings or gaps formed between the base strip and the outer margin of the cover strip. The reference character 14 indicates the opposite marginal portion of a garment opening having stitched thereto eye fastener tape provided with eye elements 15 to separably engage the aforesaid hook elements.
The novel hook elements of the hook fastener tape, when made to embody the principles of the instant invention, are formed from round metallic wire to provide the following structural elements and features. I central longitudinal member constitutes a shank portion 16 from the rearward end of which extends outwardly in one direction a lateral arm 17 which continues into a forwardly extending member 18, terminating at its forward end in an inwardly extending lateral shoulder portion 19. From the inner end of said shoulder portion 19 extends one side 20 of a hook bill formation, the opposite side 21 of which joins an oppositely extending lateral shoulder portion 22 which continues into a rearwardly extending member 23, having at its rearward end an inwardly extending lateral arm 24 terminating in a forwardly projecting abutment piece 25, which abuts one side of said shank portion 16. The main body of said shank portion 16, and the parts 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24 and 25 lie in the same horizontal plane, and together constitute the base of the hook element, consisting in base portions'extending respectively from opposite sides of the central shank portion 16, one of said base portions comprising the parts 17, 18 and 19, and the other comprising the parts 22, 23, 24 and 25. In general hook elements constructed substantially in the man ner above described have heretofore been well-known, and the same are made of round metallic wire. \Vhen such hook elements are employed in fastener tape in the manner heretofore mentioned, the hook-bill portion extends through an opening or gap provided in the juncture of body and cover strips of the tape, with the shoulders 19 and 22 abutting the joined portions of body and cover strip respectively on opposite sides of the opening or gap, thereby retaining the hook element against pulling out of the tape. Owing to the fact that the hook elements have been heretofore made of round wire, the rounded surface of part 25 of one base portion has but little contact with the rounded surface of the shank portion 16 upon which it abuts, and consequently, when outward pulling strains are exerted on the hook element in use, the abutting parts 25 and 16 tend to slip one past the other, thus permitting the stresses exerted on the shoulders 22 and 19 to bend the latter inwardly or rearwardly, with the result that the base portions of the hook element tend to collapse one upon the other,
much in the manner illustrated in Fig. 10 of the drawings. On such occurrences, the shoulders instead of presenting a square right angled abutment to and with the juncture of the body and cover strips of the tape, assume angular or wedge like positions which, under pulling strains and stresses, tends to more easily rupture the juncture of body and cover strip, so that the hook elements are frequent ly torn away from and out of the tape. The present invention seeks to provide a construction which will overcome these defects, so that the base-portions are firmly and securely maintained against such collapse, and consequently the shoulders 19 and 22 are maintained squarely in uniform bearing at the points of abutment with the juncture of the body and cover strips of the tape. To this end the shank portion 16 is provided, on the side thereof with which the part engages, with a flattened bearing surface 26 disposed in vertical plane, and in like manner, the side of said part 25 is also provided with a flattened bearing surface 27 to abut the bearing surface 26 of the shank portion 16 (see Figs. 3 and 4). The flat bearing surfaces 26 and 27, when brought into mutual abutting engagement, provide a relatively firm mutual support for the base portions against riding one over the other with consequent collapse and deformation of the shoulders 19 and 22.
lVhile it is preferable to provide the mu tually engaging bearing surfaces in connection respectively with the meeting sides of the shank portion 16 and abutment piece 25, this is not absolutely essential, since but one of said parts may be provided with the bearing surface to which the rounded side of the other may be abutted, and by which it may be firmly supported against slip or displacement to permit collapse of the base portions. This is illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, in which the abutment piece 25 is alone shown to possess the bearing surface 27.
A further modified construction operative to brace and hold the base portions of the hook elements against slipping and resultant collapse, consists in providing vertically or horizontally serrated bearing surfaces in connection either with both the abutting shank portion 16 and abutment piece 25 or with one or the other thereof only. As shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the serrated bearing surface 28 of the shank portion 16 receives interlocking abutment of the serrated bearing surface 29 of the abutment piece 25. In this case it is not necessary to flatten the meeting surfaces of the parts 16 and 25, since the bottoms of the serrations (when the latter are cut in the rounded or cylindrical surfaces of said parts) provide bearing contacts well calculated to prevent relative displacement of the parts from desired normal position. On the other hand, the meeting faces of the parts may be flattened and then serrated. This last mentioned arrangement is shown in Figs. 8 and 9, in which the shank portion 16 is provided with a iiattened surface 30 from which the serrations 31 spring, and in like manner, the abutment piece 25 is provided with a flattened surface 32 from which the serrations 33 spring.
My invention is intended to include any form of means calculated to support the base portions against displacement from normal plane and normal abutting relation, and to this end any arrangement of tongue and groove construction in connection with the abutting parts thereof, Whether longitudinally or transversely disposed, may be employed.
Having thus described the invention, 1 claim 1. A hook element for hook fastener tape, comprising a hook structure made of round wire formed to provide a hook-bill element and laterally abutting base wings of substantially rectangular shape, said base wings having at their forward ends oppositely and laterally extending shoulders substantially at right angles to the axis of said bill portion, said shoulders being integrally joined at their inner ends with said hook-bill element, and said base Wings being further provided with mutually abutting portions parallel to the axis of said bill portion, and said latter portions having interengaging bearing surfaces in meeting relation to prevent lateral collapse of said base portions with consequent distortion of said shoulders thereof.
2. A hook element'for hook fastener tape, comprising a hook structure made of round wire formed to provide a hook-bill element and laterally abutting base wings of substan tially rectangular shape, said base wings having at their forward ends oppositely and laterally extending shoulders substantially at right angles to the axis of said bill portion and integrally joined at their inner ends thereto and said base Wings being further provided With mutually abutting portions parallel to the axis of said bill portion, and said latter portions having flat meeting surfaces to prevent lateral collapse of said base portions with consequent distortion of said shoulders thereof.

A hook element made of round wire comprising a hook-bill formation and laterally abutting base wings of substantially rectangular shape, said base wings having at their forward portion oppositely positioned and inwardly extending lateral shoulder portions, said shoulder portions being joined integrally at their inner ends With said hook-bill for mation, said base wings having mutually abuttingportions arranged rearwardly of said shoulder portions, said abutting portions having their abutting surfaces deformed from the normal round contour of the Wire to provide interengaging surfaces substantially parallel to the axis of said hook-bill formation to prevent lateral collapse of said base wings and consequent distortion of the shoulder portions thereof.
