UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. 'DIEG-Es, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO DIEGES & CLUST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION. i
BADGE.
Application filed August 1, 1921.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. Diners, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough. of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of badges in which a ribbon is usually attached to a cross bar by sewing, said cross bar having a pin attached to its rear side for the purpose of attaching the badge to the apparel of a person.
The object of my invention is to dispense with the sewing of the ribbon to the cross bar, and at the same time provide a positive means for holding the ribbon in place upon the cross bar, and the invention consists in so forming the cross bar with overlapping flanges which hold the ribbon between serrated plates, the saw teeth of which penetrate the ribbon and linterlock with each other, so that-it is impossible to remove the ribbon, when the parts are compressed together by suitable means.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure l, is a rear elevation of my improved badge, the ribbon being broken away; Y
the cross bar beof the same have Fig. 2, a rear elevation of fore the overlapping flanges been bent over;
Fig. 8, a front elevation of one of the serrated plates, and Fig. 4, an elevation of a serrated plate provided with a pin for attachment to the clothing of the wearer;
Fig. 5, a cross section upon plane of line 5-5F ig. l, upon an enlarged scale;
Fig. 6, a partial horizontal section upon plane of line 66F ig. l, upon an enlarged scale;
Figs. 7 and 8, edge views of Figs. 3 and 4:, upon an enlarged scale. V
I have herein shown my badge as made up of stamped sheet metal.
The cross bar A, is formed with the upper overlapping flange a, end flanges a', a', and lower flanges a2, a2, a recess a3, being formed between the lower flanges ai, a2, for the reception of' the ribbon R.
Serrated plates S, S', fit within the flanges a, a', a', 0,2, a2, of the cross bar A, when in- These serrated plates S, S', are formed with saw teeth s, s', which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921. SeriaI No. 488,998.
are preferably bent slightly inward and outward with relation to each other.
The plate S', is formed with a pin and catch C, on its rear side so that the badge as a whole may be attached to the clothing of the wearer.
The cross bar A, with its overlapping anges a, a', a', a2, a2, being in the position shown in Fig. 2, the serrated plate S, is inserted between said flanges and rests upon the inner surface A', of the cross bar A, the teeth s, on the lower edge of the serrated plate S, occupying the open space a3, on the cross bar A. The ribbon R, is then placed over this plate S. The serrated plate S', having the pin catch C, is then placed upon the ribbon R. K
The flanges a, a', a', a2, a2, upon the cross bar A, are then turned over by suitable means, as by dies, under pressure, and the parts compressed to the required degree.
It will be seen by reference to the drawings that the teeth 8, s', on the plates S, S',
.are bent slightly inward and outward with relation to each other, with relation to each parts are brought together they interlock with one another, at the same time penetrating through the ribbon R, and in this position hold the ribbon R, firmly and positively in position upon the cross bar A.
This feature of my invention I deem iinportant, in that it does away with the necessity of sewing the ribbon to the cross bar A, thereby saving time, labor and material, and at the same time allows me to use a ribbon of aprescribed length and size.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
l. The combination of a badge, formed with a cross bar having overlapping flanges integral therewith, said cross bar, two serrated plates independent of each other and formed on one edge with saw teeth, said saw teeth being slightly bent and opposed to each other, said serrated plates held upon said cross bar and between the flanges formed thereon, the teeth formed on the edges of said serrated plates penetrating a ribbon held between them, for the purpose de-. scribed.
2. The combination of a badge, formed with a cross bar having overlapping flanges,
and are so arranged other that when the a serrated plate having saw teeth upon one of its Yedges slightlybent, a serrated plate having saw teeth slightly bent and With a. pin attached to its' outer surface, a ribbon 5 held between said serrated plates, said ser.- rated plates, the teeth upon the' Vsaidserrated plates penetrating the ribbon held be-`V tween them, and said saw teeth'upon said serrated plates interlocking With eachother, for the purpose described.
