GARMENT SUPPORTER Filed Nov. 2'7, 1935 I jyi iaez Harrie Patented July 14, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIQE GARMENT SUPPORTER Conn.
Application November 27, 1935, Serial No. 51,891
6 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in garment supports and more especially to novel means for connecting a button tab to a loop member.
Usually button tabs have been connected to the loop member by means which bites into or requires perforation of the tab and this results in weakening the tab so that it has a short life. In accordance with the present invention the tab instead of being weakened is left imperforate and provided with a reinforced shoulder which is clamped to the loop by special fastening means.
It will therefore be understood that the primary purpose of the present invention is to provide connecting means for joining the tab and loop, the connecting means being of such character that the joint will be stronger and more positive than those heretofore employed, and the connection may be made rapidly.
With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter disclosed in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my improved structure.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevation taken from the rear of the loop member and showing the tab in extended position before it is folded down to place the button of the tab in position to engage the loop.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the tab detached from the loop member.
Fig. 5 is an edge view of the same.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the fastener element of the structure with the tongues of such element extended.
Fig. 7 is a similar view with the tongues bent toward one another to illustrate the position of the tongues when the fastener is in place in the structure.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the fastener taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawing, 9 is a conventional loop member preferably formed of rigid metal and having an upper bar portion I0, an intermediate button-receiving portion H and alower button-retaining portion I2.
A conventional metal eye l3 to be secured to the garment supporter (not shown), has a lower bar N that is joined. to the bar In of the loop by any suitable means such as a hinge element l5 also preferably made of metal. The member l5 provides an abutment surface at the upper end of the loop for a purpose hereinafter explained.
A button-tab member I6 is associated with the metal parts and preferably consists of a strip ll 5 of textile tape provided at its upper end with an enlarged transverse shoulder l8 and at its lower end with a button iii. The parts l8 and. I9 are preferably formed of relatively stiff rubber and the part I8 is preferably triangular in cross 10 section as best shown in Fig. 5, in order to provide an elongated abutment surface which extends across the tape. The parts l8 and I9 may be secured to the tape I l by vulcanization, adhesives or the like, but it will be noted that the parts 15 I8 and H] are imperforate and the tape I1 is also imperforate to eliminate weakening of the button tab.
A fastening member 2| is adapted to span a portion of the loop, and is employed in securing 2 the tab to the loop. Such fastening member is best shown in Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive. It will be noted that it consists of an arc-shaped strip of metal having its medial portion 22 stamped into channel shape cross-section, as shown at 23 in Fig. 8, but the ends of the fastening member are left flat to provide tongues 24 which when bent toward one another may be used to secure downwardly converging portions 25 of the loop to the shoulder I8 of the tab, while the abutment surface 20 of the latter is in engagement with the hingle element l5.
In other words, in assembling the parts, the abutment surface 20 may be placed in abutting relation with the lower end of the hinge member l5 and then when the fastening member 2| is placed in position and the tongues 24 are bent backward upon the shoulder 3, they will clamp the shoulder to the converging portions 25 of the loop and from that time on, will hold the abutment surface 20 in engagement with the member l5, whereby, as the tab is placed in the position shown in Figs.
1 and 2, the shoulder and hinge member will cooperate with the fastening member to prevent detachment of the button tab from the loop.
As the member 2| is of arc shape, its highest portion is brought in close proximity to the hinge element I5 to prevent the shoulder l8 from working loose. Furthermore, the arc formation enables the tongues 24 to be bent back toward the medial portion of the part 2| in fastening this part to the loop member, and consequently the tongues can effectively grip both end portions of the shoulder l8.
From the above it is believed that my improved structure and method of assembling the parts may be readily understood and it is obvious that changes may be made in the details disclosed Without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the claims.
What is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. A garment fastener comprising a loop member and a tab member, said loop member being provided at its upper end with an abutment surface, a button-tab member folded over the upper end portion of the loop member and having a transversely extending shoulder at its upper end provided with an abutment surface engaging the abutment surface at the upper end of the loop, and a fastening member spanning the loop and having tongue portions for clamping said shoulder.
