Description
S. J. MODEL STRIKE PLATE Feb. 17,1931.
Filed April 26, 1930 Patented Feb. 17, 1931 SIMQN 3'. MODEL, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN STRIKE PLATE Application filed April 26,
This invention relates to improvements in strike plates for door latches.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a strike plate supplied with 6 means for varying the opening of the strike plate which receives the latch, so that the up any displacement on the part of the latch,
so that when the latch is projected into the usual opening, it will engage the adjustable member and thus prevent rattling or movement of the latch when engaged with the strike plate.-
A further object of the invention is the pro vision of a strike plate wherein an adjustable member is mounted thereon to take up any looseness on the part of the latch engaged with the strike plate, and wherein said member can be quickly and readily adjusted and can be applied to various types of locks with very little cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth,
pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a horizontal section taken through a door 'jainb, illustrating my improved strike plate attached thereto; 49 Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the strike plate; A
Figure 3 is a front. elevation; and, Figure tis an edge view. j Referring more particularly to the drawing, it will be noted that the door jamb 1 is provided with the usual recess 2 over which the strike plate 3 is fitted. As shown in Figure 3 the strike plate includes the usual body having adjacent its upper end the latch receiving opening 4 and beneath this opening 1930. Serial No. 447,711.
is the bolt receiving opening 5. At each end of the plate?) are the openings 6 which are used for receiving screws or other similar fastening members to retain the plate in position.
Extending laterally from one of the longitudinal edges of the plate 3 is a guide flange 7 which is disposed transversely of the opening 4: and against which the inclined face of the latch 8 is adapted to engage when the door is swung to a closed position so as to retract the latch until it reaches the opening 4 at which time it will project into the opening 4, as shown in Figure 1.
Arranged upon the rear face of the plate 5 3 are the spaced guides 9 and intermediate the guides at the outer edge of the plate 7 is a lateral ear 10 having an opening with an annular shoulder 11 aroundsaid opening for seating the circular head 12 of the adjusting 7 bolt 13. The head of the bolt 13 is retained on the shoulder 11 by means of a plate 14: secured to the inner face of the ear 10 and the head 12 is engaged by means of a screw driver, or other similar tool for rotating the bolt through the opening 15 in the ear 10. The bolt 13 is adj ustably engaged with a nut portion 16 on the movable plate 17.. It will be noted that the ends of the plate 17 are slidably mounted within the guides 9 and by adto justing the bolt 13, the inner edge of this plate can be adjusted over opening 4, as shown'in Figures 1 and 3.
As shown .in Figure 1, the plate 17 has been adjusted inwardly so that when the latch 8 is in its locking position, the latch will engage theinner edge of plate 17 and se= curely hold the door 18 in a closed position tight against the door stop 19, thus preventing rattling or hanging of the door after the latch 8 has been projected into the open ing 4 in the strike plate,
Various ways may be provided for adjusting the plate 17 over one edge ofthe opening 4, but attention is directed to the fact that the adjustment must be comparatively small at any time, due to the fact that as a rule, the variations of the latch with respect to the plate opening 4 is small. However, the
adjustment can be quickly and easily made through the medium of the bolt 13.
In the construction of a strike plate such as disclosed, it will be noted that it will reduce labor cost in installing these strike plates, due to the fact that the opening 4 can he made sufficiently large for various types of latches and this will require less work in lining up these plates with the latches and after being installed, the plate 17 can be ad'usted with respect to the opening 4 in or er to have the latch properly fit the opening against the plate 7 to prevent any rattling or loose movement of the door when closed.
WhileI have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent that slight changes may be made in the construction when putting the invention into practice without departing from the spirit of the same or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim: a p
1. Ina device of the character described, a strike plate having a latch receiving opening, spaced guides at one side of the plate and arranged upon opposite sides of the opening, a lateral car on the plate at one edge between said guides, said ear having an opening with an annular shoulder around the opening, a bolt having a head arranged in said opening and engaged with said shoulder, a cover plate for retaining the head on the shoulder, a movable plate mounted in the guides and having a nut portion adapted to be engaged by the bolt for-adjusting said movable plate relative to the opening in the strike plate.
2. A device'of the character described including a strike plate having a latch receiving opening, spaced guides at one side of the strike plate, a lateral ear projecting from one edge of the strike plate and arranged between the guides, said ear having an opening and an annular shoulder within the opening, a bolt having a head arranged in the opening and seating on the shoulder, a cover plate attached to one side of the ear for retaining the bolt head in said opening, a movable plate at one side of the strike plate having a laterally disposed nut portion adapted to be engaged by the bolt whereby turning movement ofthe bolt will adjust said movable plate relative 'to the opening in the strike plate. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State oi Wisconsin.
