Application September 8, 1936, Serial No. 99,706
2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in striker plates for door latches, wherein a base, adapted for permanent `attachment to a door jamb, is provided with a recess having a bay 5 extending into the striker extension of said base, within which recess is adjustably mounted a plate having an aperture to receive the latch bolt of a door lock and also having a lip extending into the bay of said recess, said base and plate operating in conjunction with fastening or securing means mounted on said plate and engaging said base and movable in several directions laterally in the plane of said base whereby the aperture of said plate may be adjusted to an altered or malposition of a latch bolt.
The primary object yof the present invention is to provide a new and improved striker plate for latch bolts.
Another object is to provide a new and improved striker plate for door locks and having improved means for readily and easily adjusting the latch bolt receiving aperture to register with the latch bolt of a door lock.
A further object of the present invention is o to providea new and improved striker plate for latch bolts and having improved means for readily adjusting the latch aperture of said plate to an altered position of a latch bolt which will eliminate the necessity for moving said plate or remortising the door jamb tot the required alteration.
I accomplish these and other objects by means f the improved device disclosed in the drawing forming a part of the present application, and
in which- Fig. l is an enlarged, broken View of a portion of a door jamb, with my improved striker plate attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a broken, transverse sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated; and
Fig. 3 is a broken, longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated.
Referring to the drawing:
The numeral I is used to designate a section of a door jamb within which is permanently mortised what I term, for convenience, a base 2,having the usual striker extension 3 extending beyond said door jamb I.
The base 2 is provided with a preferably centrally disposed recess 4 within which is provided the usual latch bolt opening or aperture 6, said 55 recess 4 being also provided with a bay 1 extending into the striker extension 3 of said base 2, as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
A plate 8 is mounted within the recess 4 and is also provided with a latch bolt receiving aperture 9 and a lip II extending into the bay 'I of 5 the striker extension 3 to bridge thesame. The face of the plate 8, when in the recess 4 of the base I, lies flush with the face of said base 3 in order that a latch bolt, not shown, may slide easily over said plate 8 and base 2. The face of o the lip II within the bay 'I also lies flush with the face of the extension 3, for the lsame purpose.V v
Securing means, preferably screws I2, are mounted in the plate 8 and extend inwardly through suitable apertures I4 within. opposite 15 ends of the recess 4 of the base 2, the inner ends of said' screws I2 engaging bars 'I6 lying upon the back surface of the base Las disclosed in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. These apertures I4 are larger than the shanks of the screws I2 so that said screws and the plate 8 may be moved in any direction relatively to and in the plane of the base 2, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth. r
The bars or elongated nuts I6 are limited against complete rotation by means of suitable stops Il' set in the back of the base 2 and are positioned within the usual mortise I8 provided back of the striker plate to permit a latch bolt, not shown, to extend beyond said plate for effective engagement therewith.
In operation: v
The base 2 is permanently mortised, as hereinbefore set forth, into the door jamb I with the plate 8 mounted within the recess 4 thereof. The aperture 9 of said plate is adjusted, by moving said plate 8 to the proper position within the' recess 4, to register the aperture 9 thereof with the latch bolt, not shown, and the screws I2 are then tightened to hold the plate 8 in such adjusted position, the stops I'I operating to prevent rotation of the bars or nuts I6 so that said screws I2 may be properly tightened.
If, through sagging or other malposition of the door and bolt thereof, the said latch bolt should not properly register with thepaperture 9 of the plate 8 the screws I2 may be loosened, the plate 8 and its aperture 9 easily and readily adjusted to the proper position without moving the base 2 or cuttingA a new mortise and llingup the old one to accommodate the striker plate and its latch bolt receiving aperture to the altered position of said latch bolt, not shown.
It should be noted that the latch receiving aperture 6 of the base 2 is larger than the aper- 55 ture 9 of the plate 8 in order that a full opening for the passage of the latch bolt, not shown,
. may be permitted for all positions of the plate 8.
extending into the said bay of said recess tobridge said bay, the face of said plate and lip lying flush with the face of said base and striker extension thereof, said plate being thereby coextensive in its face with the face of said base and adjustable to altered positionsrof Va latch bolt.
2. A striker plate for latch bolts comprising a base adapted for permanent attachment to a door jamb and having a striker extension extending beyond said jamb and also provided with a recess in the body thereof, said recess having a bay extending into said striker extension; and a plate having an aperture to receive the latch bolt of a door lock and mounted Within said recess and also having a lip extending into the bay of said recess, the face of said plate lying flush with the face of said base; and securing means mounted upon said plate and engaging said base Aand movable in any direction in the plane of said base whereby the aperture of said plate may be adjusted to altered positions of said latch bolt.
