To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM ANDnRsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door Locks and Methods of Applying the Same, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in door locks and the method of applying the same, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character whereby a lock may be applied to a door without the use of a brace and bit and chisel. it being only necessary to use a saw thus overcoming the necessity of having to employ a high grade mechanism to apply the look.

A further object of the invention is to provide'a lock casing and a face plate all of which are the same width as the doorto which the lock is applied, said door having recesses cut therein the same shape as the lock casing and its face plate and covered or enclosed by escutcheon plates.

Another object of the invention is to provide a lock which may be readily and quickly applied to a door without having to form a mortise in the door and to provide means for running the locl: in position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a lock of the character described having an escutcheon plate formed as a part of or one of the sides of the lock casing.

With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, is a fragmentary perspective view of the free edge of a door showing the same recessed for the application of a lock embodying my invention.

In carrying out myinvention ashere em bodied, 2 represents a door in the free edge of which is formed a lock recess 3 consisting of three parts of compartments, a casing compartment 4 and face plate compartments 5 one of which projects above the top of the compartment 4: the other below the bottom of said compartment and in that part of the door forming a rear wall of the compartment 4: are formed holes 6 which are small and could be formed by a gimlet. This lock recess can be readily formed with a saw as will be understood by merely sawing into the door so as to make slots and then knocking out the material between the slots by beating the same with a suitable tool such as a hammer, although if preferred after the saw slots have been formed a chisel can be used to remove the desired material.

By forming the lock recess in this manner it overcomes the necessity of using a brace bit to bore into the edge of the door which in 4 of the recess 8, while the projecting ends of the face plate 9 carried by said casing fit into the compartments 5 of said recess, said casing and its face plate being the same width as the door 2 in which the recess is formed. With the inner or rear wall of the lock casing are formed the anchoring pins which register with the holes 6 when the lock is in place in the recess, said lock being fastened by suitable fastening devices such as screws which pass through the holes 11 and into the face plate and are threaded into the woodwork of the door.

After the lock has been properly positioned either or both sides thereof may be covered and enclosed by an escutcheon' plate 12 of any desirable material or any suitable size and configuration the same being fastened to the door by means of screws 13 or their equivalent passing through the plate and into the door.

In Fig. 5, I have shown an escutcheon plate 14: formed as a part of the lock casing and preferably integral with said casing and its face plate but otherwise the construction is the same and the use is identical. Where the escutcheon plate is formed with the lock casing, said plate is preferably used as the outside one making it necessary to produce such locks in rights and lefts and a separate escutcheon plate may be fastened to the door.

In either case or whether the escutcheon is formed as a part of the lock or as separate elements the lock to be applied to a door must be as wide as the thickness of said door or more particularly the face plate must be the same width as the thickness of the door to which it is applied in order that there shall be no cracks to mar the appearance of the door.

It is to be understood that I do not make any claim to a particular mechanism as this may be of any well known or desired construction but what I do claim is the combination of a lock casing of the same width as a door to which it is to be applied with said door recessed from one face to the other at one edge and means in the form of escutcheon plates either formed as separate elements or integral with the lock casing for enclosing or partially enclosing said lock casing.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be Varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is A door lock including a casing a face plate carried thereby anchoring pins projecting from the rear wall of said casing in combination with a door recessed to receive said lock casing and face plate. and escutclr eon'plates disposed across said recess and secured to the door for enclosing the lock casing.
