ADJUSTABLE STRIKE PLATES Filed Nov. 27, 1959 United States Patent ()fiice 3,006,677 Patented Oct. 31, 1961 3,006,677 ADJUSTABLE STRIKE PLATES John Royalty, 401 Berry Ave., Hayward, Calif. Filed Nov. 27, 1959, Ser. No. 855,880 4 Claims. (Cl. 292-341.18)
This invention relates to improvements in locks and latches, and particularly to an improved and most practical strike plate which is adjustable to compensate for inaccuracies in positioning of the strike plate relative to the heel of the latch bolt when the door is in contact with the stop.
This strike plate is provided with an auxiliary lip which is micrometrically adjustable to take up any slack to maintain the door against any movement or rattling, insuring a quiet door while providing for adjustment at will to compensate for swelling or shrinking of the door frame.
The objects and advantages of the invention are as follows:
First, to provide a strike plate which is micrometrically adjustable at will to compensate for inaccurate positioning and for swelling or shrinking of the door or jamb.
Second, to provide a strike plate as outlined which can be adjusted at will for variations occurring after initial adjustments have been made.
Third, to provide a strike plate as outlined with an eccentric adjustable at will from the exterior to permit adjustments on the mounted strike plate.
Fourth, to provide a strike plate with an auxiliary lip micrometrically adjustable through the medium of an eccentric adjustable exteriorly on the mounted strike plate and including means maintaining the edge of the auxiliary lip parallel with the lip of the strike plate.
Fifth, to provide a strike plate as outlined which is economical to manufacture, easy to install and adjust.
In describing the invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is an exterior elevation of the invention mounted on a door jamb and adjusted for the specific latch bolt.
FIG. 2 is an inside view of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 illustrates a modification in which an auxiliary lip is adjusted through the medium of an eccentric.
FIG. 5 is an inside view of FIG. 4.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary view showing the eccentric made to a polygonal form to provide flat bolt-cooperative edges.
FIG. 7 shows the strike plate fragmentarily with the eccentric removed to indicate the recess stops for the various adjustments.
The conventional strike plate stops short of the stop 10 and requires very exacting positioning, while my invention contemplates having the strike plate abut di rectly against that stop to insure proper alignment of the lip 11, greatly simplifying the mounting thereof. Other than this extension of the strike plate and the chamfering of the lip as indicated at 12, no changes are made except as may be required for mounting the auxiliary lip, which may be in the form of a plain eccentric 13 which is fixed on the inner end 14 of a countersunk head pivot 15, the pivot being so located as to position the back of the eccentric even with the main lip 12, so that full adjustment of the eccentricity is provided. In this arrangement the eccentric is frictionally secured, either by direct contact with the strike plate or intervening friction material 16, though the eccentric may be provided with a bead 17 on the underside with recesses 18 formed in the plate as indicated in FIGS. 6 and 7. The head of the pivot is slotted for screw driver adjustment as indicated at 19. Further-more the eccentric may be formed with a series of straight edges, or polygonal in form as shown in FIG. 6 but would thus lack the fine adjustment of the circular eccentric.
FIGS. 4 and 5 illustrate a very desirable modification, "being slightly more expensive to make but being very finely adjustable through the medium of the eccentric 20 which likewise is fixed on the end of a countersunk head pivot 21 as indicated at 22 and this eccentric operates in a vertical slot 23 having a width to snugly span the eccentric, the adjustable member being in the form of a rectangle as shown and having a rectangular opening 24 with an ear at each end as indicated at 25 and 26, the vertical slot being formed in the ear 26 while the ear 25 is merely tapped and threaded fora lock screw 27 which operates in a horizontal slot with beveled walls as indicated at 28 and being on the lip side of the adjustable member.
Two lugs or pins 29 and 30 span the ear 26, and they with the screw 27 maintain perfect alignment of the lip. Adjustment is carried out by loosening the screw 27, and the eccentric adjusted by means of a screw driver to bring the lip 31 to the desired position after which the screw 27 is again tightened, tightly securing the lip against the back of the main plate.
I claim:
1. An adjustable strike plate comprising a plate having a bolt receiving passage having a lip beveled for easy advance of the bolt, and an eccentric and a pivot therefor and mounted on the underside of the plate for projection beyond the lip for cooperation with the bolt, said pivot having a countersunk head and operable from the exterior of the mounted strike plate, with the eccentric fixed on the inner end of the pivot.
2. A strike plate having a bolt receiving passage having a lip, and an eccentric providing an auxiliary lip extendable into said passage and mounted on the underside of said strike plate and having a pivot fixed therein and with the pivot rotatable in a passage formed through the strike plate, said pivot being adjustable from the outer side of the plate for adjustment of the eccentric relative to the lip first mentioned and means cooperative between said strike plate and said eccentric for securing said auxiliary lip in adjusted position.
3. A structure as defined in claim 2, said eccentric being polygonal in form to provide a series of peripheral edges varying in spacing from the axis of the pivot for cooperation with the bolt.
4. A structure as defined in claim 3, said means cooperative comprising a bead formed on the plate contacting side of the eccentric, and a series of angularly spaced recesses formed in the strike plate for cooperation with said head, with said recesses formed concentric to the axis of the pivot.
