ADJUSTABLE STRIKER-PLATE FOR DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1921.
Application filed November 13. 1920. Serial No. 423,777.
lowing is a specification.
This invention has as its main object to provide a type of catch or keeper engageable with a sliding, spring projected latch whereby the door or part carrying the latch may be held closely in engagement with the jamb or equivalent contact part, or maintained securely in a slightly open'position, providing for ventilation without releasing the door, the keeper having two registering projections or stages, either of which may be used as desired.
A further object is to provide means for readily adjusting the engaging projections 0r catches, preventing rattling or looseness of the door, irrespective of wear, minor distortions, shrinkage or the like, either to the door or its jamb.
These and other minor objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings forming an essential part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a keeper plate made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the device, drawn to a decreased scale and illustrating its application to a conventional type of automobile door.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates the wall of the car and 11 the door, the latter "containing a spring actuated lock 12 from which extends the latch bolt 14 retractable by the handle 15.
The joint 16 between the edge of the door and jamb 17, is formed diagonally as shown and covered, when the door is closed, by a strip or plate 18 carried by the door, the strip also extending over a recess 19 made transversely in the jamb, open to the outer-, side of the car.
Disposed in the recess is a plate 20 having a flange 21 at its outer end and a projection 22 near its inner end both extending from the rear side of the plate.
The front, outer side of the plate has an opposed undercut longitudinal extension 23 along each of its lateral edges, acting as a slide way, for the base of anintegrally formed pair of adjusting tri-angular striker blocks, keepers or catches 24 and 25, arranged in tandem in the same plane the keeper 25 being at the inner end of the plate. Formed with the base of these keepers is a lug 26 extending through anelongated opening 27 in the plate 20, the lug being drilled and screw-threaded to receive a screw 28.
The head 29 of this screw is disposed in a counterbored opening 30 in the flange 21, while its reduced end 31 passes through an opening in the plate projection 22 and is prevented from retraction by upsetting its extending end in such manner that the screw ma Y be freely rotated.
n order to hold the screw 28 in adjustment, a narrow transverse cut 33 is made in the lug 26 so that the two sides are caused to bind upon the body of the screw.
The opening 35 permits-a screw 36 to pass through the flange, at a point beyond the opening 30, the screw holding the striker plate 20 in position in conjunction with another screw 38 passed through an opening 37 in the end of the plate.
In operation, the striker plate {having been assembled, it is secured in position to present the inclined surfaces 24 and 25' of the keepers outwardly to make contact with the spring latch bolt 14 as the door 11 is closed.
If it is desired to hold the door tight shut, the lock bolt is pressed past the outer catch 24 and engaged with the catch 25, presenting a substantially smooth and level surface. Should ventilation be required the latch bolt is engaged with the catch 24, holding the (100! securely in a partially closed position.
Due. to wear, warping or shrinking of ma terial and constant subjection to atmospheric conditions, such doors frequently cause annoyanceby rattling and vibration, even when plosed as tightly as is ordinarily possible; in the present invention such occurrences can be avoided or at. least remedied by applyin a suitable instrument to the head 29 of t e screw, causing it to turn and carry with it the catches, adjusting them along the striker plate body in either direction as may be required, thus fulfilling the purposes of the invention in an efficient manner.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made without conflicting with the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A spring bolt keeper having two adjusting catches,'either of which may be engageable by the bolt.
2. A spring bolt keeper having adjusting catches and means for adjusting the catches relative to the ultimate swinging movement of the bolt.
8. A spring bolt keeper comprising a plate having securing means on one side and a slide upon the other, a pair ofcatches arranged in tandem in said slide, said catches being engageable with the bolt and means fcln' moving said catches linearly along said p ate.
4. A spring bolt keeper comprising a plate fixed in the jamb of the door carrying the bolt, one or more catches slidable on said plate, a lug on the catches extending through said plate and a screw passing through said lug, said screw being journaled at the rear of said plate and adapted to adjust said catches.
5. A spring bolt keeper comprising a plate fixed in the jamb of the door carrying the bolt, a plurality of catches slidable longitudinally on said plate, a lug extending through the plate, said lug and catches being integral, an adjusting screw for said lug and means in the lug for maintaining said screw in adjustment.
This specification signed and witnessed this 10th day of November, 1920.
