ADJUSTABLE s'rnnmn PLA E.
designed for use inconnection with the mov able bolts ofvehicle door locks and latches.
vention is to provide a striker plateiof this type that is adapted to be readily adjusted upon a suitable door j'amb without interfer- 10 body for taking upwear and ing with the usual trimming mafterial of the H preventing the lock bolt from rattling. Another object is to providea novel form ofretaiiier plate that is preferably connected to the striker plate and is adapted tocos operate with a portion of the door jamb for tion.
holding the striker plate in adjusted 1 posifurtherobject to provide a' common means for securing the striker'jplate and retainerplatetothejamb;
Still another objeetisltoprovid'e a light and durable constri lcti'onwhieh can be manufactured at comparatively" low cost.
With the above and other objects in View the inventionconsists in certain novel featlires of construction, eoinbinations and arrangements ofparts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appendedclaims.
In the accompanying drawing a Figure 1 is a' f a menmy side elevation of a door jarnbwith a 'strikerplate embodyinn" my invention attached thereto.
Figure2 is a cross sectional view taken onthe lineQ-Q of Figure 1 i Figure 3 is a perspective view of the striker'plate.
Fignreetisaperspective view of 'the re- Y tainer plate."
Figure 5; is a fragmentary "perspective a view of the door jamb when the; striker plate and retainer plate are: removed. Referring: now to the drawing in which likech araeters of reference designate corre spending parts throughout the several views, thenumeral 1 designates a door jamb prefera-bly of a vehicle body. q As shown, this jhmb ispreferably formed of sheet metal and is provided at its front and rear edges One ofthe -essential "objectsof the in-' withthe oppositely extending lateral flanges 2 and 3" respectively.
jamb,' I preferably provide asuitable striker plate 5 that is preferably mounted, upon the outer face ofth'e jamb. This plate 5 is preferably formed of sheet metal and is preferably provided intermediateits ends with a relatively widetransversely extending opening 6 and a laterally extending tongue 7. Asshovvnqthe opening 6 preferably extends from'the tongue 7 to the rear edge ofthe plate and is adapted toregister with atransversely. extending opening 8 in the jarnb l for receiving a suitable bolt 9 of a loekcarried by the door 4. Thetongue 7 preferably extends intothe transversely extending opening S-inH-thejamb 1 and provides a flat bearing for thebolt 9vwhile in phe registering openingsb and 8 respectivey. 9 in'to'the registering openings 6 and 8, thestriker plate is also preferably provided in advance of the opening 6 with a relatively wide depressedlportion 11 which To facilitate the movement of the bolt- In order that a swinging'door 4 may be held closedagainst the rear flange 2 01 the preferably inclines inwardly from the forward edge ofthe opening 6 to the forward;
edge of the plate 5 and isreceived by a suitable depressed portion 12 in the jamb 1.
In order that-the striker plate 5'may be readily adjusted transversely of the-jamb 1 without interfering with the usual trimming material (not shown) of the vehicle body for taking up wear and preventing the bolt 9 from rattling, the depressed portion 12 in thejamb is preferably channel-shaped andpreferably extends from the forward edge of the jamb to the forward edge of the transversely extending opening 8.
Located upon the inner face of the jamb 1 is a retainer plate 13 that is preferably channel-shape in cross section-and is. provided at its opposite sides with thelaterally extending attaching flanges 14. a As shown, this retainer plate 13 preferably efna braces the depressed portion 12 of the jamb and receives the, lateral tongue 7 -ofpth striker plate. The flanges i the retainer flanges 1 1 of the retainer plate 13. Thus;
the strikerplatc 5 and" retainer plate 13 may be clamped against opposite sides of the jamb 1 by a common securing means and are capable of moving as a unit when adjusted thereon.
In order that the striker plate 5 may be held in adjusted position, the base of the retainer plate is preferably provided at its rear end with a series of transversely extending corrugations 21 that are adapted to be alternatel en a ed b a suitable ton ue h h n 22 j'irojecting inwardly roni the jamb 1 at the rear end of the opening 8. Thus, the arrangement is such that thetongue 22 may be held firmly in engagement with any of the I corrugations 21 when the flanges 14 of the retainer plate and the ears 15 of the striker plate are clamped against the ainb by means of the screws 16.
In use. when it is desired to adjust the striker plate 5, the screws 16 are preferably adjusted so that the corrugations 21 of the retainer plate will be disengaged from the tongue 22, whereupon the striker plate 5 and retainer plate 13 may be adjusted as a unit transversely of the jamb 1to the desired position. The screws 16 may then be adjusted to clamp the plates 5 and 13 against the jamb so that one of the corrugations 21 will engage the tongue 22'for holding the striker plate 5 in adjusted position.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily apparent that the striker plate 5 may be easily adjusted transversely of the jamb 1 without interfering with the usual trimming material (not shown) of? the vehicle body. Inasmuch as thescrews 16 are capable of se curing both the striker plate 5 and the retainer plate 13 to the jamb, it is also apparent that these plates move as a unit and may be held 'firmly in adjusted position by the tongue 22 when the screws 16 are adjusted to clamp the plates against the jamb. Thus, the device is formed of relatively few parts which may be easily and quickly assembled or taken apart As a result, the cost of manufacturing such'a device has been reduced to a minimum.
W'hile it"is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have itiunderstood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
