ALEXEN ER e. BARRETT, or IDABEL, OKLAHOMA d ,DANCING, DOLL i Application filed-May s, 1930i Seria1'1fo. 450,813
The present invention relates to dancing dolls or toys. I
An object of this invention is to provide a dancing doll which is so constructed that it 7 j may be set in motion by any desired power means, being adapted for attachmentto a phonograph or other rotating member and also so constructed that itmay be readily mounted on the radiator or other part of a motor vehicle. Another object of this invention is to provide means by which a number of dolls bemounted upon a single supporting structure and so positioned thereupon as to dance in unison.
The above and various other objects and advantages oft-his invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the samebeing illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a detail side elevation partly in section of device constructed accordingto the preferred embodiment of this invention; Figure 2 is a sectional view t-aken on the line 22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the device taken on the line 3+3 of Figure 1. I
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate correspondparts tl'n-oughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates a base upon which i are mounted'vertically disposed supporting members 11 and 12, the supporting member 11 being positioned at the front or forward end of the device and the supporting member 12 being positioned at the rear thereof. The support 11 is provided at the upper end portion thereof with an aperture 13 there- I through and in like manner the supporting member 12 is provided with an aperture 14 therethrough which aligns with the aperture 13 in the front support so as to rotatably rei ceive a horizontally disposed shaft 15.
A power member 16 is secured to one end of the shaft 15 and in the preferred embodiment of this invention the power member is disclosed as being constructed in the form of a propeller or the like which is adapted to be electric motor or the like.
rotated by contact with wind or the like, the i base LO-being preferably mountedin the wind such as on a motor vehicle or',if desired, the
base lO may bemounted on a stationary supportingpostwhlclris in a draft of air or the like.v v I c While I have disclosed the power member 7 16 being constructed in the form of a propeller I do not wish to be limited to this construction as, if desired, a grooved pulley .60-
or thelike may be mounted'on one end of the shaft 15, and the pulley connected by means of a flexible band; or the like to any other desire-d power memberas a phonograph, an
, The drive shaft 15' is provided intermediate the ends thereof with a reduced shaft 17 the drive shaft being cut away at 18 and a dancing doll or other member generally des ignated as 19 is adapted to be mounted. upon the offset crank portion 17. The doll or figure member 19 comprises a body or torso portion 20 upon which is mounted a head 21, and a pair of legs 22am pivotally secured to the lower end portion of the torso 20 and, if de-- sired, feet members 23 may be pivotally see cured to the lower end portions of the leg members23; I s p Y H The body. 20 is provided intermediate the upper and lower end portions thereof with a so horizontally disposed aperture therethrough 24 which preferably is of flaring construction adjacent the outer end portions thereof, the aperture 2 1' being adapted to rotatably re ceive the crank portion 17 of the drive shaft S5 15. i The driveshaft 15 is provided with'an eccentrically-disposed member 25 which extends inwardly from the cutout portion 18 and is adaptedto strike the bodyor torso 20, the eccentrioportion 25 being preferably 9 constructed insuch avmanner that itwill'impart'a rocking or forwardan'd rearward movement to the torso 2O,- u-pon rotation of the shaft 15. This forward and; rearward movement of the body 20 is adapted to substantially simulate the swaying movement of a dancing dolla'nd this movement is imparted simultaneously with the'lraising and lowering-of the doll by means of the'offset crank portion 17. i V V 109 with the wind sothat it will be rotated;
thereby.
Where the device with other power means than the, propeller 16 the fin 27 may be dispensed W1tl1 Wh1l6 I haveshown the shaft as being provided with only one offset crank 17 for receiving a single doll member 19 I do not wish to be limited to this construction as the shaft 15 maybe provided with any number of crank members 17 therealong for receiving any number of dancing doll members 19.
In the operation of this device, the base 10 together with the vertically disposed supports 12 may be mounted in any desired position and preferably mounted where a considerable draft of air will strike the propeller orpower member 16. Upon rotation of the power member 16 the shaft 15 will be coactively rotated and the rotation of the shaft 15 will impart a vertical movement to the doll member 19 so that the feet of the doll will be constantly striking the base 10 and due to the hinged construction of the leg members 22, the feet will be constantly moving coactively with the vertical movement ofthe body 19.
When the shaft 15 is rotated, the eccentrically disposed portion 25 will strike the outer surface of the body 19 and impart a forward and rearward rocking movement thereto, this movement being readily permitted. by the tapering construction of the outer end portions of the aperture 24: through the body. It
is of course understood that the body 19 is rovided with suitable swinging arm memliers 28 which will swing coactively with the swaying movement of the body.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that an amusing toy has been disclosed which may be very cheaply manufactured and whichmay be operated by various power members and, if desired, usedffor display purposes in show windows or the like.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes and modifications'may be made inthe details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
WVhat is claimed is: v
1. A dancing figure toy of the character described,"said dancing figure toy having a horizontally disposed aperture, said aperture being flared at the opposite end portions is used in conjunction '9 thereof, a shaft,an offset crank on said shaft 1 intermediate the ends thereof loosely mounted in said aperture of said body portion, an
- body and adapted for intermittent engagement with a base.
2. A dancing figure toy of the character described, comprising a body having a horizontally disposed aperture, said aperture being flared at the offset end portions thereof,
a shaft, an offset crank secured to said shaft intermediate the ends thereof, a propeller secured to one end of said shaft, saidpropeller being adapted to be rotated in a draft of air, a pair of vertically disposed supporting members, means carried by the shaft and engaging sald body whereby to lmpart a swaying motion to the body cooperatively with the vertical movement thereof, and a rearwardly extending fin secured to one of said supporting members, said fin being adapted to keep the dancing figure toy facing the draft of air.
3. A toy of the character described'comprising a drive shaft, means for rotatably supporting said shaft, an offset crank secured to said drive shaft, a figure having a horizontally disposed aperture therethrough loosely mounted on said offset crank, an eccentric secured to said drive shaft and engaging said figure whereby to impart a swaying motion to the figure simultaneously with the rocking motion imparted by the offset crank. r
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
