Description

Patented Oct. 27, 1925.
UNITED STATES main: J. HANLEY, or NEW YORK, N. Y. I
. V I TOY..
Application filed July 25, 1924; Serial No. 728,217.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK J. HANLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a toy. An object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient toy which will afford children pleasure and will prove unusually attractive to them.
Another ob'ect concerns the provision of simple and e cient means whereby a part of the toy is caused to move rapidly as the toy is operated.
A further object concerns the provision of simple and eflicient means whereby in the movement and operation of the toy a sound will be produced to make the toy further attractive to the child.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, of which and Figure 2 is a front elevation.
The form of the invention shown in the drawings is a preferred form, although it is understood that modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts and in the character of the materials used may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
In its general aspects the invention com prises a handle on one end of which a wheel or pulley, is mounted. Mounted in association with the handle is a revoluble element which is preferably of the pin wheel type. This revoluble element is connected by any suitable means, such as a belt, with the wheel or pulley so that as the wheel is rolled along the ground or is manipulated the pin wheel element is rotated rapidly and provides an attraction for the child. Preferably the pin wheel element may be provided with sound-producing means whereby when it is revolved at a'high rate of speed the sound is produced by the action of the air.
The preferred orm o the invention as Figure 1. is a side elevation of the device;
shown in the drawings comprises a handle member 1 on one end of which a pulley 2 is rotatably mounted. Associated with and preferably mounted on the handle portion is a stub shaft 3 on which a rotatable element 4, of the pin wheel type, is mounted. This element is mounted on a sleeve 5 surrounding the stub shaft 3 and is'connected by means of a belt 6 with the pulley, the belt 6 riding in a groove 7 formed in the pulley. The pulley may be provided with a handle 8 so that the pulley can be operated by hand when desired. An eye 9 is mounted on the handle near the pulley and through this eye the belt 6 passes for the purpose of guiding it and holding it more securely in the groove 7.
In one, and the preferred form of the invention, the wings 10 and 11 of the pin wheel element may be provided with soundproducing means, such as whistles Y12 and 13, which produce sound when the element 4 is rotated rapidly due to the action of the air currents.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a simple and eflicient toy which can be either rolled along the ground by a child or manipulated by him to rotate the pin wheel element and, when desired, to produce a sound. This device is capable of affording considerable pleasure and amusement to children and is obviously simple and economical to manufacture. It is understood, of course, that other types of rotating elements can be mounted on the handle and other means than a pulley can be used to connect the rotating element with the wheel.
What I- claim is A toy device, which comprises a handle, a wheel rotatably mounted on one end thereof, said wheel being grooved, a stub shaft mounted on the handle with its axis at right angles to the axis of the wheel, a sleeve on the stub shaft, a pin'wheel element rotatably mounted with the sleeve on the stub shaft, a belt connecting the pin wheel element to the wheel, said belt travelling in said groove, and an eye on the handle adj acent the wheel through which the belt travels whereby it can be guided to hold it in the g ov FRANK J. HANLEY.
