Description

0. D. BEEBE.
FENCE.
Pazenteadune zo, 1876.
PATENT OFFICE.
ORMS D. BEEBE, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVE'MENTIN FENCES'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,897, dated June 20,1876; application filed March 23, [876.
To all whom it may concc'n:
Be it known that I, ORMUs D. BEEBE, of Elmira, county of Ohemung, State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of one of the posts With a section of fence attached. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing a gate connected with the posts; and Figs. 3 and 4 are 'detached views of the short connecting-piece by means of which the fence and gate are connected to the post. p i
My inventionconsists, first, in a novel construction of'extensible post, whereby it is adapted for use in fences of different heights; second, in a novel manner of connecting the rails of the fence with the posts; and, third, in a novel construction of rail and pickets, all as hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawings, A A' represent. the sections forming the posts, the section or part A' being fitted and adapted to be adjusted Vertically within the part or section A, adaptin g said post to be lengthened or shortened, and permitting it to be used With fences of different heigh ts. These sections of posts are provided each with elongated slots a a' upon two or more sides, the part a of the slot being' made larger than the part al, the slots receiving and holding the tongue-pieces hereinafter described, and`to which the rails are connected. B is the connecting tonguepiece, provided With the shouldered tenons or ends b, said tenons being of the same size as the portion a of the slot in the post. These tongue-pieces are connected to theV fence or gate rails in any preferred manner. O are the rails, which may be made of Wood or iron, as dei sired, and are provided with slots for receiving the strips of band-iron O', forming the pickets.
By the construction of rail and pickets above described the rails are adapted to be set nearer to' or t'arther from each other, for adapting them for use in different heightsof fence.
B' represents a modification in the form of tonguepiece, having a similar enlarged end or shouldered tenon to the tongue B, for connecting it to the post, but provided at its opposite end with a Vertical eye or perforation, adapting it to receive the pivot of an ordinary hinge.
'The foundation for the posts may be made of stone, and the post secured thereto in any usual or preferred manner.
The posts may be ornamented in any desired manner-such, for instance, as that shown in the drawing-a cap being` placed upon the lower part of the post A, and also upon the upper portion of the part A', the
latter being` also further provided with a finial ot' any suitable ornamental design, as shown.
Different forms of tongues and slots mayl be made for securing the tongue-pieces to the post.
Havin g now describedmy invention, what'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The extensible posts A A', co'nstructed and Operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as deseribed.
2. The 'short connecting-piecesB, provided with the shouldered tenons, in combination with the slotted or mortised post, substantially as and for the purpose deseribed.
3. The band -iron pickets made in the arched or double form, in combination With the notched or mortised rails, permitting the adjustment of the latter thereon, as deseribed.
