Description

died/ed lima WILLIAM WILSON, JR., OF RAYMOND, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 92,553, lated July 13, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FIELD-FENCE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom yit may concern.
Be it' known that I, WiLLLA-u WILSON, Jr., of Raymond, in the county of Champaign, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Field-Fences and Gate combined; and I do hereby declare thatl the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilieation, in which- Figure l is a vertical cross-section or my improved fence, taken through the line :i: a', fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a side View of a portion ofthe saine.
Figure 3 is a top view ot' a portion of the saine, partly in section, through the line y y of tig. 2.
Figure 4 is a detail viewof the latch and latchboard. v
Figure 5 is a detail view of a' hinged coupliiigboard. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to finnish a simple, cheap, strong, durable, and substantial fence, and one which shall bc so constructed and arranged that any of the panels may be easily adjusted for use as a gate; and I It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the felice, as hereinafter more fully described.
The panels, coupling-boards, braces, latch-board, and latch, are all made of the. saine-sized stumprefer- :ably about foin' inches iii breadth.
A' are the panels, which are formed by attaching` vertical slats, al, tothe ends of the horizontal bars u?.
lhe horizontal bars or slats a2 may be of any desired length, and, when long, the panels A may be strengthened by one. or more intermediate vertical slats or bars c, as shown in fig. 2.
llie panels A iiiay be formed with three, four, five, or other desired number of horizontal bars a?, as the circumstances of the case may require.
B are the coupling-boards, by means of which the adjacent ends of the panels A are coupled or connected to each other.
The coupling-boards B are, secured to the panels A by pins O, passed through holes iii the end ot'thc said coupling-boiu'ds B, and through holes in the vert-ical end bars al of the panels A, where they are secured iii place by keys D and E, passed through the ends of the said pins C, upon each side ofthe fence.
The keys D are permanent-ly attached to the pins C, so to serve as heads to said pins.
The other keys, E, are detachable, so that they may be removed, when desired, for convenience in taking down and removing the fence.
The coiipling-boards B may be grooved transversely to receivet-lie.keys, as shown in iig. 5.
I t' desired, the detachable keys E maybe connected by small chains with the permanent keys D, so that they may not be accidentally lost.
G are the supporting-braces, which are made in the shape and manner shown in iig. 1.
The braces G are notched in their upper angle to receive and fit upon the upper edge ot' the upper coupling-.bar B, and they are also notched in the centre ofthe upper `edge of the cross or base-bar g', to fit upon the lower edge ofthe lower coupling-board B, as
braces G, the angling position et' the inclined side bars of said braces forming a broad and iii-iii base for the fence. I
At the angles of the fence, aiidwhere it is desired to use one ofthe panels A as a gate, the coupling-bars C are hinged, as shown iii lig.
\Vhen one of the panels ,A is to he used as a gate, the hinged bars B are substituted for the rigid bars upon one end only of the panel, the opposite end being detached from its panel, whichlatter is providedwith the latch and its bar in place of the rigid bars B, and vertical strips al.
The gate-panel will now swing upon its hinges, and be held closed, when desired, by the latch-bar fitting over one or the other of the central horizontal boards a2 of the gate.
Having thus described i'ny invention,
I elaini as new, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent- 1 Animprovedportz blo fence, foi-ined by the coinbinat-ion ot' the panels A, support-iiig-braces G, coupling-boards B, whether rigid or hinged, pins C, and.
keys I) and E, with each other, said part-s being coustructed and arranged substi'iiitally as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The. fence, when any desired panel is ada-pted to be converted into a gate by means of the hinged coupling-bars B, latch-board I, cat-cli H, pins C, and keys D and E, substaiitiallyin the manner herein shown and described.
