-To all 'whom it may concern:

Be` it known that I, LORENZ SAUTER, of Jersey-Oity, in the county ofuHudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Chairs,

which improvement vis fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my chair,

partly in section, when the same is unfolded for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same whenv it is folded. Fig. 3 is a side view of the inner section of the tubular supporting-bar.

. vThis .invention relates to achair which isV constructed of a tubular supporting-bar and arms carrying a iiexible seat, in such manner that the seat-supporting arms can beiuscrted in the tubular supporting-bar. l

The improvements will ybe hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims, a preliminary description being, therefore, deemed unnecessary. v

Inthe drawing, the letter A designatesthe tubular bar, which is made telescopic, so. that it can be lengthened or shortened, its outer' section'a being provided With a pin', b, which catches in an L-shaped slot, c, in the inner section d,-.so that the outer section, when it is raised and slightly turned,is firmly retained in position. A slight depression, e, atfthe end ofthe horizontal branch of the L-shaped slot c, serves to-retain the lpin b, and with it Athe -upper section, so that the latter cannot turn spontaneously. To the bottomvend of the t tubular supporting-bar A are hinged three folded by the action of springs h. The seat'G `is supported by arms D, which extend from a head, E, that fits a socket, i, in the upper end In Vthe eX- ample shown in the.draw.ing said arms are connected to their head'by pivots 7'. `When the chair is to befolded up the arms can be inserted intothe tubular supporting-bar, as shown in Fig. 2.

The head E is provided with a key,lc, which can be made to en ter a circular groove, l,in `the socket t", so that said head is retained in the socket, and can be swiveled round without-danger of becoming detached.

When the arms D are hinged to their head, as shown in the drawing, they are provided with toes m, which, when the arms are nn- "folded, and their headk is` inserted into the socket t, catch against a rim, n, on the mouth of said socket, andtherebyY the arms are prevented from collapsing when the chair is un-v folded for use.

In the head E is-situa`teda spring, o, which acts against a disk, p, that bears against shoulders q on the arms D, sothat-said spring has a tendencyto spread the arms.

When the chairris to be folded up, the seat is removed, the head E is withdrawn from the socket, the arms D are folded up and inserted into the tubular Ysupportingbar-A, and the legs B are compressed and sccured bythe ring g. When thus folded my chair can be easily'carried o r suspendedfrom the armhole of the vest, or any other portion of a garment, by means of a hook, s, and persons intending to go on picnics, or to visit an v.exhibition or fair, are enabled to provide them--v selves withchairs which .can be easily carried and used whenever it may be desirable.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure y by Letters Patent, is
