MOLDING FOR METAL FRAMES Filed Oct. 3. 1928 lill/III l w Patented Nov. 18,` 1930 ISAAC A. BAUM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS ivioLnING ron METAL FRAMES Application file-:1 October 3, 1.928. Serial No. 310,049.
My inventionr relates to framing means for wall openings, and particularly to novel means `for attaching molding strips to metal frames.
5 An object of the invention is to provide simple means for attaching metal molding strips to metal frames, such means providing a permanent and rigid attachment.
The desired result is secured in connection 1o with a frame having a plaster finish flange by slotting or otherwise aperturing the said flange andA constructing the molding strip with integral tongues adapted to project through the apertures in the flange. Other means `are provided for securing the other margin of the molding strip to the supporting frame. Y
rI he invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional view through a portion of a frame to which my invention has been applied;
Fig. 2 is a and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of a slightly modified form of the invention.`
In the drawings, the frame is shown as com-r posed of metal and of generally channel shape, having a rearwardly extending frame flange 10 and web 11 constituting the amb of the door. A plaster terminal strip of angular outline includes a base 12, and a flange 13, perpendicular to the frame element 10. The
front elevation partly inV section,
flange 13 may have a rebent margin 14 acting as a plaster anchor.- The flange l13 is provided with elongated slits 15 extending longitudinally and located at a point substantially midway between the top and bottom of l0 the fiange, and the frame element-is provided with struck out tongues 16 arranged in spaced relation.` Y
The moldingstrip may be of any desired contour and has an inwardly projecting con tinuous marginal flange 17 adaptedto underlie the tongues 16 lon the frame. j The strip ris als providedwith a -plurality of spaced integral tongues 13 adapted to project through the slits 15 as shown in the lower portion of Fig. 1, and to be Lbent overinto` the vposition shown in the upper portion of Fig. 1, by means of a suitable tool such as indicated at 19 in said Fig. 1. When bent over as shown in the upper portion of Fig. 1, the strip is firmly and permanently locked in positiointhe lool-zing being finally covered by plaster indicated at 20.
In the construction of Fig. 3, the parts heretofore described remain identical except j that the molding stripl is provided with curved tongues 21 so shaped that the tongues must 'be sprung in order to project th-em through the slits provided therefor. When the plaster, indicated at 22, is in position, theV strip is firmly locked in place inasmuch as in order to withdraw the strips, deflection of the tongues would be necessary and this cannot be accomplished due tok their being embedded in the plaster.
Either of the two forms shown may be installed to advantage either `in the shop or during the process of erection of the frame. In the preferred form shown the only tool necessary is a simpl-e bar having a! claw end in fact, the result may be secured by using the claw end of a common hammer. Y
Obviously other forms may be devised, and I do not wish tobe limited except as in.- Y
Vdicated in the appended claims.
1. In combination, a frame element', a plaster finish flange `perpendicular thereto, said flange having openings therethrough, anda metal molding strip having tongues adapted to project into said openings to serve as` fastening ,devices for' the strip.
i2. In combination, a frame element, a plaster finish flange securedthereto, said flange having slots, a Vmetal ymolding strip having tongues along one edge adapted to enter said slots, and means for holding another edge of said strip.
3. In combination, a metal frame element, a' metal plaster finishflange projecting therefrom, said lflange having openings, a metal'95 molding striprhaving tongues adapted to en-V ter said openings, t0 secure the strip to the finishl flange, and means: for securing the ,Y strip to the frame element.
4. In combinatioma frame element, a plas-k 10( ter finish flange secured thereto, said flange having slots, and a metal molding strip having tongues along one edge adapted to enter said slots7 said tongues being adapted to be distorted to lock the strip to the flange.
5. In combination, a frame element, a plas# ter finish flange projecting therefrom, said flange having openings, and a metal molding strip having tongues adapted to entei` said openings, said tongues being adapted tobebent to lock the strip to the flange.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature. ISAAC A. BAUM.
