In modern building construction, it is quite common, especially in hotels or the like, to employ metal trim, such as window sills, base boards, door and window casings, etc., and in the use of such metallic trim means must be provided for firmly and rigidly securing the trim in position. In these circumstances it is customary to securesuch trim by clips nailed on wooden inserts, blocks, or studdings, which, however, are'irregularly spaced so that provision must be made for locating the clips in whatsoever position attachment'is afforded.
The present invention is designed to pro videon the-edge of the base board plate, or other trim, to which the invention is applied, an attaching flange so conformed and con-' figured as toafford a sliding connection for a plurality of clips which maybe thus ,slid along .to the desired position, and thereafter flrmlyand rigidly clamped to the flange in such a way as to prevent any further movement between the flange and clip. This meets the requirement for permitting the clips to be suitably located to register with the joists, blocks, or other wooden inserts.

Two applications of the invention are shown for purposes of illustration, but it will, of course, be understood thatthe invention is equally applicable to other forms of 7 vmetallic building trim which provide an edge which may be flanged and attached in a-manner hereinafter to be described. I

The free edge of the inner section 1 1 is in turn bent inwardly at right angles to afford a marginal flange 15 which, it will be noted, extends inwardly at substantially right angles to the exposed surface of the base board plate or the like, and at a short distance below the turned over edge thereof.
The margiiial'flange 15 may be termed a clamping flange, and this co-operates with a series of clips 16, each clip comprising an attaching plate 17 adapted .to abut against a" wooden block, insert, studding, or the like, 18, to which the clip is secured by means of a nail l9 driven through a hole 20 in the attaching plate portion of the clip. The clip comprises an outstanding base flange 21 which terminates in a marginal rim flange 22 which, as shown, lies in a plane slightly divergent to the plane of the attaching plate portion of the clip, and extends into the channel 13 formed under the turned-over edge of the base board plate. Each of the clips is provided with an upstanding tongue 23 which is struck upwardly from the metal of the flange 15 and initially stands in a position to lie closely adjacent to the .free inner edgeof the flange 15, but out ofv gripping contact therewith.
7 The arrangement is one which initially permits the clips to be removed freely along the edge of the base board plate until brought into position for attachment, after which the tongues are struck downwardlyto engage and clamp over the edge of the 3. This slightly tilts or cants the clip and causes the rim flange 22 thereof to bindor clamp against the walls of the channel, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby tightly clamping the parts together in such a manner as to prevent any movement.
The arrangement is one which permits a loose initial fit of the parts and ensures a tight rigidultimate-flt despite slight variations inIt-he .width of the channel, and is otherwise muchsuperior to anarrangement clip, which fit. if sufficiently close and tight will also prevent an easy adjustment of the clips to the desired positions.
The formation of the clip, with its outstanding base flange 21., serves to space the base board plate, or other trim, away from the wall structure a distance substantially equal to the width of the base flange. This 1 plate after the same has been positioned.
In like manner the lower edge of the base board plate is secured to the floor, and in this instance an offset is afforded which permits the cement floor to be built up to a level with the inturned portion of the base board plate, or to a slight level below the same, in case a linoleum floor surface is to be provided.
The method of securing the edge of a window sill or the like is precisely similar to that heretofore described, as indicated by inspection of the window sill 24 shown in Fig. 5. Other forms of trim which are similarly provided with backwardl y turned portions to afford a channel terminating in a clamping flange may be likewise attached by clips of the character described, so that further illustration of the applicability of the present invention to various forms of trim is not deemed necessary.
In use, the base board plate, or other trim, will be positioned in place, and the loosely mounted clips will be moved along to the required positions to register with the exposed wooden inserts adapted for nailing, after which the clamping tongues will be pressed down by the action of pliers, or other suitable tools, which clamping action will serve to tilt forward or cant the clips to bring the attaching plate portion 17 thereof in substantial parallelism with the plane of the wooden attaching surface which, as before noted, will serve to bring the marginal clamping flange 22 into angularly gripping relation to the walls of the channel, so that, when the clips are nailed in position in flatwise relation against the wooden attaching surface, the base board plate, or other trim, will be held rigidly against any vibration or movement. When the parts are thus positioned, the wall can be finished and the space behind the trim can be grouted, if desired.
The invention is one which is extremely easy to manufacture and which is convenient and etflcient in use, since provision is made for actual clamping or biting contact between the clips and the channel walls, which method of securement is far superior to any with which I am familiar.
I claim:
1. In attaching means of the class described, the combination of a trim having a channel formed in its attaching portion and an inwardly'turned flange along the margin of said channel, a clip having a portion thereof entered into said channehand a portion thereof formed to engage the inwardly turned flange, and means for attaching the clip,.substantially as described.
2. In attaching means of the class described, the combination of a trim having a channel formed in its attaching portion and an inwardly turned flange along the margin of said channel, a clip having a portion thereof entered into said channel, and a portion thereof formed to engage the inwardly turned flange, and means for attaching the clip, the relation of the parts beingsuch that when the clip is attached, the portion thereof entering the channel will be tilted to clamp against opposite walls of the channel, substantially as described.
3. In attaching means of the class described, the combination of a trimhaving a channel formed thereon and an inwardly turned flange extending along the edge of the channel, a clip provided along one edge with a portion entered into the channel and further provided with a tongue adjacent the flange and adapted to be brought into clamping relation therewith, and means for attaching the clip, substantially as de' scribed.
4. In attaching means of the class described, the combination of a trim having a channel formed thereon and an inwardly turned flange extending along the edge of the channel, a clip provided along one edge with a portion entered into the channel and further provided with a tongue adjacent the flange and adapted to be brought into clamping relation therewith, means for attaching the clip, said meansincluding a portion of the clip adapted to'abut in flatwise relation against a portion of the wall, and means entered through said clip portion and into the wall, substantially as described.
5. In attaching means of the class described, the combination of a trim having a channel formed thereon and an inwardly turned flange extending along the edge of the channel, a clip provided along one edge with a portion entered into the channel and further provided with a tongue adjacent the flange and adapted to be brought into clamping relation therewith, and means for attaching the clip, the relation of the clip and channel being such that when theclip is attached to the wall, the portion thereof entering the channel will be tilted to engage the opposite wall surfaces thereof, substantially as described.
6. In attaching means of the class described, the combination of a trim having a channel formed thereon and an inwardly turned flange extending along the edge of the channel, a clip provided along one edge with a portion entered into the channel and further provided with a tongue adjacent the flange and adapted to be brought into clamping relation therewith, means for attaching the clip, said means including a portion of the clip adapted to abut in flatwise relation against a portion of the wall, and means ent tered through I said clip portion and into the Wall, the relation of the clip and channel being such that when the clip is attached to the wall, the portion thereof entering the channel will be tilted to engage the opposite wall surfaces thereof, substantially as described.
7. In attaching means of the class described, the combination of a metallic trim provided alongits edge with a backWardly turned portion affording a channel, the edge of said portion being turned away from the trim to afford an attaching flange, a clip of L-shaped formation having its-marginal portion entered into thechannel, its base portion underlying the flange, and the wall attaching portion outstanding from the trim in oflset relation thereto and in position to abut flatwise against a portion of the wall, and a tongue struck away from the base portion of the clip in position, when struck down, to embrace and clamp the channel flange between the tongue and the base of the clip, substantially as described.
8. In attaching means of the class described, the combination of a metallic trim provided along itsedge with a backwardly turned portion aflording a channel, the edge of said portion being turned away from the trim to afford an attaching flange, a clip of L-shaped formation having. its marginal portion entered into the channel, its base portion underlying the flange, and the Wall attaching portion outstanding from the trim in offset relation thereto and in position to abut flatwise against a portion of the wall, and a tongue struck aWay from the base portion of the clip in position, when struck down, to embrace and clamp the channel flange between the tongue and the base-of the clip, therelation of the attaching portion of the clip and the marginal portion of the trim being such that when the tongue is struck down and the clip is attached to the wall, the marginal portion of the clip will stand in oblique relation to and impinge WINGATE S. THOMAS.
