This invention relates to a waste basket construction. 'It is an objectand purpose of the present invention to provide a novel construction for waste baskets which will be 6 attractive in appearance, economically constructed and easily assembled, and which is available for large quantity production with a consequent saving in cost of manufacture.

A further object of the invention is to provide a waste basket construction consisting of sev eral parts which may be separately formed in quantities, which parts may be quickly and readily assembled into a practical and serviceable article of the type noted.

An understanding of the invention may be had from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,

Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing. In the manufacture of the waste basket,

two halves of the waste basket forming the body thereof are provided as indicated at 1, each being substantially semi-cylindrical in form but tapering downwardly from their upper ends which are of somewhat larger radius than thelower ends. The twoparts of the body may be made of any suitable material. I have made them of wood veneer but it is to be understood that the material used is no essential feature of the present invention.

The two halves of the body are placed together with their vertical edges substantially abutting there, however, being a joining memher of sheet metal between the adjacent edge portions of the two halves or members 1 of the body. The joining member is made of'a single length of sheet metal formed into substantially T-shape having an outer head 2, a web 3, and outwardly extending flan es 4 as best shown in Fig. 5,'the edges 0 the body members 1 seating between said head and flanges.

After the two halves 1 of the body have been placed together with the joint members described between them a ring 5 of sheet metal, of the form best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is applied at the upper end and at the inner sides of the body of the basket, the lower inner edge of the ring 5 having an outwardly turned annular tongue 6 which seats in a continuous groove cut at the inner sides and near the upper ends of the body members 1. The ring 5 extends upwardly is then curved outwardly and terminates in a downwardly andinwardly extending annular lip 7.

A second ring of sheet metal is located around the outer sides of the body 1, comprising a ring flange 8 from which a section 9 extends outwardly and upwardly at an angle to the horizontal terminating in an upwardly extending ring flange 10 which is formed with a continuous annular groove 11 at its outer side a distance below its upper edge,as shown in Fig. 3. This secondsheet metal ring member is placed around the lower end of the body and then moved upwardly until theinner flange 8 bears snugly against the body adjacent its upper end. The terminal lip 7 of the first ring member 5 seats in the groove 11 and bearstightly and snugly therein, the flange 10 being snapped into place. This form of connection of the parts is one only of several which may be used and the invention is not specifically limited in any respect to the particular form of construct-ion for retaining and holding the ring members in place as shown and described. e v v The bottom of the basket is a pan of sheet metal having a horizontal bottom 12 and an annular upwardly extending flange 13, the upper edge of which is turned outwardly to provide an annular outwardly extending lip 14: which seats in a continuous groove formed at the inner sides and near the lower ends of the body members 1.

After the bottom member has been put in place a sheet metal ring is located over the lower end portion of the body, comprising an inner ring flange 15 which bears snugly againstthe outer sides of the body and an outer downwardly extending ring flange 16 connected with the flange 15 by an intermediate section preferably shaped to give an ornamental appearance.

A second pan of sheet metal located underneath the first described pan having a bottom 17 and an upwardly extending annular flange 18 at its edges which comes within the ring flange 16 and snugly engages therewith. Bolts 19 preferably four in 11U111 her, are extended. downwardly throu h openings in the bottoms 12 and 17 and through supporting feet 20 of sheet metal formed substantially as inverted domes, the bolts passing through the bottoms of said feet and receiving nuts 21 which are located in suitable upwardly embossed recessed portions 22 of the feet, as best shown in Fig. at.

The construction described is made of parts which are quickly and easily fabricated, all the sheet metal. parts being formed on a punch press by use of suitable dies. The bolts 19 serve to secure the bottom members and the supporting dome feet securely together. The assembly of the parts is simple. The Waste basket produced is one of a very attractive appearance and it may be made at low cost because of the large quantity methods of manufacture to which the construction described lends itself.

Various changes and alterations in the constiuctive detail and in the shape of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the invention. For instance, while the waste basket has been shown of a substantially cylindrical form, or frustro-conical form, this shape of basket is not the only one which may be readily used in construct-- ing the basket as it is evident baskets of a polygonal shape can be made quite as well. The invention accordingly is not to be limited to the particular construction shown and described but is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within the scope of the claims appended hereto which define the invention.

I claim:

1. A waste basket construction comprising, a plurality of. complementary parts positioned together to form a body, a ring member surrounding the upper end of the body, a second ring member connected to the parts of the body at the inner sides thereof and having engagement with the first ring member. a bottom and a third ring member around the "body at the lower end thereof for holding the parts together, said third ring member engaging with said body.

2. A waste basket construction comprising, a plurality of sections of like construction positioned with their edge portions substantially abuttin to form an open body, a ring member around the lower end of said body holding the sections thereof together, a bottom interlocked with said body, a ring member around the upper end of the body holding the parts together, and an additional ring member interlocked with the body at the in nor sides thereof and adjacent the upper end, extending over and having engagement at its outer portions with the ring member at the upper outer side of the said body.

A waste basket construction comprising, a plurality of body members of like shape positioned to form an open body, a sheet metal bottom located within the lower end of said body and having an outwardly extent.- ing lip, the body being grooved at its inner side to receive the lip, a second sheet metal member located underneath said bottom havan upwardly extending flange located a short distance beyond the outer sides of the body, leans scuring said bottom and said metal member together, a sheet metal ring surrounding the body at its lower end to hold parts of the same against movement, raid ring having a downwardly extending flange located around the upwardly extending flange of sai sheet metal member, and means located around the upper end of said body for securing the same against separation.

In a waste basket construction, a plurality of body members positioned to form an open body, a bottom for said body, means for holding said members at their lower ends against s paration, a sheet metal ring surrounding the upper end of the body, having section extending upwardly and outwardly from the body and terminating in an upwardly extending flange, a second sheet metal ring formed with an outwardly turned lip at its lower inner edge, said body being groov d at upper end and at its inner sides e said lip, said second ring extending upwa and outwardly and thence clownwardly to terminate in a downwardly extending flange located around and embracing the flange of the first mentioned ring.

5. A construction containing the elements in combination defined in claim l said flanges of the two rings at the upper end of the body having interlocking engagement with each other.

6. A waste basket construction comprising, a plurality of body members of like form positioned together to form an open body, means at the upper end of said member for binding the smile together and securin the same against separation, said body adjacent its lower end and at the inner sides thereof having a horizontal groove therein, a bottom member n the form of a sheet metal pan located within said body, said bottom member having an outwardly extending lip received in said groove, a second bottom member in the form of a sheet metal pan located underneaththe first bottom member, said second bottom member having an upwardly extending annular flange at its outer edges located around and spaced a short distance from the lower end of the body, bolts extending through said bottom members, supporting feet located underneath the lowermost of said bottom members through which said bolts pass for securing the bottom members together and the feet thereto, and a ring of sheet metal located around the lower end of the body having an inner flange embracing the body and a lower downwardly extending flange embracingthe upwardly extending flange of the second bottom member.

7. A waste basket construction comprising, a plurality of sections positioned to form an open body, means for retaining the upper end portions of said sections in assembled relation, a ring member at the lower end of said body having interlocking engagement with the inner sides of said sections, a second ring member surroundingthe outer sides of said sections at their lower ends to hold said sections in engagement with said inner ring member, detachable fastening means associated with said two ring members to hold them in assembled position, and a bottom portion formed integrally with one of said ring members. p

8. A waste basket construction comprising, a plurality of sections positioned to form an open body, means for retaining the upper end portions of said sections in assembled relation, a ring member at the lower end of said body having interlocking engagement with the inner sides of said sections, a second ring member surrounding the outer sides of said sections at their lower ends to hold said sections in engagement with said inner ring member, a bottom formed integrally with one of said ring members, supporting feet located below said bottom and detachable fastening means extending through said ring members and feet whereby the feet areheld in position upon the bottom and the ring members are held in position relative to each other and to the sections of the body.

9. A waste basket construction comprising,

a plurality of sections positioned to form an open body, an inner top ring member having interlocking connection with the sections of the body, an outer top ring member engaging the outer surface of the sections and holding the sections in interlocking engagement with said inner top ring member, means for connecting said inner and outer top ring members together, an inner bottom ring member having interlocking engagement with said sections of the body, an outer bottom ring member engaging the outer surface of the sections and holding said sections in interlocking engagement with said-inner bottomring member, and detachable fastening means as-- sociated with said bottom ring members to retain them in assembled position.- :10; A waste basket construction compris- 'ing,fa plurality of sections positioned to form an open body, an inner top ring member hav ing interlocking connection with the" sections of the body, an outer .top ring-member engaging with the outer surface of the sections and holding the sections in interlocking engagement with said inner top ring member, means for connecting said inner and outer top ring members together, an inner bottom ring member having" interlocking engagement with said sections of the body, an outer bottom ring memberengaging the outer surface of the sections and holding said sections in interlocking engagement with said inner bottom ring member, a bottom formed integrally with one of said bottom ring members, supporting feet beneath said bottom, and detachable fastening means extending through said bottom ring members and through said feet to retain the feet against said bottom and to retain the bottom ring members in assembled relation.

11. A waste basket construction comprising, a plurality of sections positioned with their edge portions substantially abutting to form an open body, an inner top ring member having interlocking connection with the sections of the body, an outer top ring member engaging the outer surface of the sections and holding the sections in interlocking engagement with said inner top ring member, means for connecting said inner and outer top ring members together, an inner bottom ring member having interlocking engagement with said sections of the body, an

outer bottom ring member engaging the outer surface of the sections and holding said sections in interlocking engagement with said inner bottom ring member, detachable fastening means associated with said bottom ring members to retain them in assembled position, and joining strips interposed between the abutting edges of the body sections and extending between the upper and lower ring members and retained against longitudinal movement by said ring members.

12. 'A waste basket construction comprising, a plurality of sections positioned with theiredge portions substantially abutting to form an open tapered body having its top larger than its bottom, an upper inner ring having interlocking connection with said sections, an upper outer ring engaging the outer surface of said sections and retaining them in interlocking engagement with said inner ring, means for connecting said inner and upper rings, an inner lower ring having interlocking engagement with said sections, an outer lower ring surrounding the outer surface of said sections, detachable means for retaining said inner and outer lower rings in assembled relation, an outer clamping ring engaging the outer surface of such sections and holding them in interlocking engagement with said inner lower ring and means for connecting said outer lower ring and said outer clamping ring.
