(Application filed. Mar. 14, 190R) UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES WV. DE WALT, OF HOMESTEAD, PENNSYLVANIA.
COLUMN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,603, dated December 10, 1901. Application filed March 14, 1901. Serial No. 51,199. on. model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES IV. DE WALT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Homestead, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 001- um us, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompa nying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wooden columns, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby difierent styles of columns may be formed of a number of strips or staves which are joined together in a novel manner.
The invention further aims to construct a column that may be easily joined together and possess all the advantages of a solid column. Furthermore, the invention contemplates to construct a hollow column having core-blocks arranged therein at certain intervals, to which the strips forming the outer body portion of the column are jointed.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several Views, in Which-- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved column. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation thereof, partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the same, partly in section, the capital being removed. Fig. 4 is a side view of one of the core-blocks employed for joining the column together.
1 To construct a column in accordance with my invention, I employ a number of strips or staves 1, which are substantially Z-shaped in cross-section orend viewand when in position form what are known to the trade as ogee mold-columns. These strips or staves may have their outer face beaded, fluted, or of the 'ogee design, or made of a style as maybe desired. The inner face 4 of each strip or stave engages and rests against the core-blocks 8, the overlapping head 6 on each strip or stave having its inner face 2 in engagement with the face 5 of the adjacent strip, while the edge face 3 of each strip lies against the edge face of the adjacent strip or stave, these edge faces being cut at corresponding angles to effect a neat fit. shown 7 indicates the ornamental bead or flute extending the length of the strips or staves. I preferably employ at least two of the core-blocks 8-one at the base of the column and one at the top-and may also employ intermediate core-blocks, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. These core-blocks are provided peripherally with notches g, which receive the faces 4 and a portion of each face 3 of the strips or staves, said notches when tapered columns are formed being inclined. The strips or staves are preferably securely fastened to the core-blocks by means of nails 10, which are driven into said blocks through the faces 5 of the strips or staves.
I desire to call particular attention to the fact that by the use of the core-blocks I am enabled to construct a tapered column without the employment of tapered strips or staves. To accomplish this, the strips or staves are arranged around the base of the column with the edges 3 out of engagement with the edges of the adjacent strips, but at the top of the column these edges will be in engagement. The joint will be effectually closed the length of the strips or staves by reason of the overlapping head, the separation of the strips or staves not being sufficient to move the head of one strip or stave from engagement with the adjacent strip or stave. A taper may thus be imparted to the column according to the spread given the strips or staves at their lower ends, and this with the use of strips or staves of equal dimensions throughout.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In the form. of strip the said strips or staves to said core-blocks, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES W. DE WALT.
