Description

I G. B. WARREN. FURNITU RE -CAS'I'ER. No. 177,903. Patented, May 23,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. WARREN, OF PROSPECT, ASSIGNOR TO LEWIS W. KLAHR AND CHARLES F. KLAHR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT l.N FURNlTUR'E-CASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,903, dated May 23,1876; application filed March 29, 1876. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. WARREN, of Prospect, Butler county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Furniture- Oasters, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of casters in which the stem carrying the roller is adapted to a socket driven into the leg of a chair or other article of furniture; and the object of my invention is to retain the said stem in the socket by a device, on the principle of What is known as the bayonet-joint, and yet permit its withdrawal therefrom by a' slight manipulation. This object I attain in the manner which Iwill now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the caster and one-half of thetwo-part socket; Fig. 2, a sectional plan on the line 1 2, Fig. 1, drawn to an enlarged scale; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of a portion of the socket.
Ais the stem of the caster, and has at its lower end the usual arms a, carrying the roller B. The upper rounded end of the said stem, when the several parts of 'the caster are in their proper relative positions, bears against the concave portion a: of the interior of the socket B, which is made in two parts, inthe usual manner, as shown in Fig. 2.
Extending round the interior of the socket, at the lower end of the same, is a retainingflange, E, the continuity of which is interrupted at the point e, where a passage is formed in it for the pin fon the stem A, when the latter is introduced into the socket. This passage or recess is partly vertical and partly horizontal, so that a slight manipulative effort is required to introduce the stem into the socket, and cause the pin f to pass through thesaid recess in the flange. When the stem has been introduced into the socket, its accidental withdrawal, on lifting the furniture to which it is connected, will be prevented by the pinf, flange E, and aprojection, 01, adjacent to the recess. When the socket is elevated, and the pin f is bearing on the flange E, the stem may be removed after first raising it until the pin f coincides with the horizontal portion of the recess c, and then turning the stem until the pin coincides with the Vertical portion of the recess.
I do not desire to claim, broadly, a caster. and socket secured by means of a bayonetjoint, as this is old and weltknown; but
I claim as my invention In a furniture-caster, the combination of the stem A and its pinf with the internal flange E, recess e, and projection d of the socket, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE BAILEY WARREN.
