lMPROVEMENT I'N SHUTTER-FASTENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,463, dated May 16, 1876; application filed March 29, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSHUA E. BROOKS, of Baltimore, Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter-Fasteners; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents my invention applied to a window-frame. Fig. 2 represents a plan of my invention, the top plate of the metal box being removed. Fig. 3 represents a cross section of my invention through the line a" a, Fig. 2.

The object of my invention is an easy and .ready method of fastening shutters, so that they can be disengaged only from the inside.

The invention consists of a pair of pivoted spring-pressed tumbler-latches, arranged in a casing inserted within the window sill, and combined with a spear or arrow headed fas telling-catch on the shutter, so that when the latter is closed the catch will be grasped by the tumbler-latches and retained until the lathes are thrown apart by a sliding handle,

as will be hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents a window-frame, to which shutters are hinged, and in the sill of which a recess is cut for the accommodation of the metal box B, which is securely fastened by screws or otherwise to the sill. G G are shutters, rabbeted in the usual manner, the one which lies over the other having firmly attached to it the spear-shaped catch 0,-with rounded end and catching-points on both sides. Within the metal box B are the two tumbler-latches, b b, lying close together and parallel to each other. They are pivoted through their centers and joined by the bar or connecting-rod b which runs from the front end of one to the rear end of the other; Firmly attached to that one of the tumbler-latches which is joined by its front end to the connecting-rod is the sliding handle D which passes through a curved slot in the top of the metal box, and has a lateral and circular motion. Within, on the sides of the metal box, are fastened the strong springs b b, the free ends of which press against the backs of the tumbler-latches and keep them set close together. The catching-points of the tumbler-latches face each other, and form between them a triangularshaped space for the reception of the rounded point of the catch on the shutter.

The mode of operation of my invention is as follows The-shutters being closed in the usual manner, the point of the spear-shaped catch presses between and is caught by the points of the tumbler-latches, which are held against it bythe action of the lateral springs. When it is desired to unclose theshutters the sliding handle b is pushed in the slot in the top of the metal box, which action presses back one of the lateral springs and moves the attached tum bler-latch to one side. The tumblerlatch, by means of the connecting-rod which joins its front end to the rear end of its fellow, moves the latter in the opposite direction, thus opening the points of the tumbler-latches and disengaging the point of the spear-shaped catch secured to the shutter, whichqmay then be opened.

It is to be observed that the shaft of the spear-shaped catch rests, when the shutters the window-sill, and the spear-headed catch c of the shutter, all constructed and relatively arranged substantially as herein set forth.
