LATCH.
Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
Application filed June 3, 1914, Serial No. 842,662. Renewed January 19, 1917. Serial No. 143,415.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN A. J nNsnN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Minden, in the county of Kearney, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in latches, and particularly to latches for use on doors or gates.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a latch which can be easily operated from either side of the door or gate. Another object is to provide a device of this character which combines a latch and handle, the handle itself being so formed that it engages a keeper for holding the door or gate in closed position.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a door showing my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the door just above the latch,
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view showing the door in open position.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a door which is formed with the two slots 11 and 12. Secured to the opposite sides of the door and provided with slots 14. registering with the slots of the door are the plates 13 and 15. Above and below the slot 11, and formed integrally with the plate 13 are the perforated ears 16.
An approximately rectangular frame is provided which forms the handles and latch, this frame including the longitudinal parallel portions 17, and the connecting end portions 18. The end portions are formed in two parts each part being carried by one ofwith a notch or shoulder 22 which is adapt- 1 ed to be engaged by a keeper 23 carried by the door frame 24:. On the other end member is mounted a coil spring 25 which bears with one end against the plate 15 and with its opposite end against a washer 26 carried by the member. This spring holds the parts normally in the position shown in Fig. 2. The shouldered portion of the end member is rounded, as at 27, to easily pass the keeper 23. I
' In the operation of the device, one of the members 17 is grasped and pulled outwardly from the door. This will cause the entire frame to swing on the pivot pin 21 and move the shoulder 22 away from the keeper 23, and permit the door to be opened. When the other member 17 is grasped it is pushed toward the door, and in so doing accomplishes the same result as pulling the other member. Thus the shoulder 22 can be readily moved away from the keeper from either side of the door.
In the other of the end members is formed a shoulder 28 which is adapted to be engaged by a hook member 29 secured to the wall at the hinge side of the door, and is intended to hold the door in open. position.
Extending vertically through the spring carried end member 18, adjacent the notch 28 is a pin 30 which bears against the plate 13 and prevents the member being drawn too far through the slot 12 by the spring 25.
What is claimed is In a latch, the combination with a door provided with slots, of plates secured on opposite sides of the door and provided with slots registering with the door slots, a latch member comprising a frame including side and end members, the end members being disposed through the door and plate slots, one of the plates having a pair of ears pivotally supporting one point of the frame therebetween, a shoulder formed on the frame, a keeper for engagement with the shoulder,.a spring disposed between one of the plates and a portion of the frame, a second shoulder formed on the frame at a point diagonally opposite the first shoulder for engagement with a wall carried hook.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
