Nirn s Para-Mr Fr es HAROLD WILLIAM PEARCE, or rnovrnnucn, nrronn ISLAND; assrenon TO THE -WELSH MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF
' RATION OF RHODE ISLAND PROVIDENCE, BEOIQE ISLAND, A CORPO- CLIP -AND METHOD CF IEAKING THE SAME Application filed April 13,
The present invention relates to clips for writing implements, like mechanical pencils and fountain pens.
A clip of the above-described character is usually joined to the pen or pencil casing or cover at one end, and its free end is spring pressed into engagement with the casing or described character,
corresponding to Fig.
its own resiliency. Sometimes, the
cover by given a "slight bend to free end is merely facilitate slipping a pocket flap between the pen or pencil and the clip. Other clips, however, have a more efficient holding device in the form of a terminal hollow ball. As the clips are constituted of sheet material, it reuires a number of manipulations to produce the ball, which adds to the difficulty and eX- manufacture of the preferred clip from the sheet metal blank of Fig. 2 Fig. 4 is a View 3 of the completed clip; and Fig. 5 is an end view.
' The sheet-metal blank comprises a body portion .2 and a terminal flange portion 4: joined together by a reduced neck 6. The
portion 8 of the flange portion l is first bent transversely up out of the plane of the sheet,
along the line of the neck 6, and around, as
shown in Fig. 3, and the end 10 of the termi nal portion l is then bent aroundsubstantially into contactwith the neck 6. At the same time that these transverse bending operations are performed, the terminal portion 4: is bent longitudlnally also to produce a bulging barrel-shaped effect, with the result that the terminal of the clip is provided with arounded or more-or-less spherical surface 12 that has all the efiiciency'of the present- 1923. day ball head, but that is nevertheless manu factured muchmore simply andat very greatly reduced cost. I
Theother end i l of the clip is'joined to the pen or pencil casing or cover 16 in any desired way. V I Modifications will readily occur to persons skilled in the art, and all such are considered to fall within the spirit and scope of the in-; vention, as-defined in the appended claims.
that is claimed is: i
1. As an article of manufacture, a clip of sheet material having a body portion, a terminal portion, and a reduced neck portion between the body portion and the terminal port1on, the terminal portion being bent transversely up and around,*-with the end of the terminal portion disposed adjacent to the neck, the terminal portion being also bent barrel.
2. As ana-rticleof manufacture, a clip of longitudinally into the shape of a bulging sheet material having its terminal portion substantially bulging barrel shaped.
3. As an article of manufacture, a clipof sheet material'having a body portion, a terminal portion, and a reduced neck portion between the body portion and the terminal portion, the terminal portion being substantially bulging barrel shaped.
4. A method of making a clip that comprises bending the terminal portion ofa sheet of material out of the plane of the sheet along a line, bending the terminal portion trans versely into barrel shape so that the end of he terminal portionshall be disposed adj acent to the line, and bending the terminal portion longitudinally into the shape of a bulg- .1 111g barrel.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto sub- 0 scribed mv name.
HAROLD WILLIAM PEARCE.
