Patented Aug. 1934 UNITED STATES `PATENT OFFICE clinton E. Marshall, New York. N. Y. Appiicaton July 15, 1933, serial No. $110,596
9 claims. (o1. z4 11) The invention relates to clips for use in connection with fountain pen caps and like articles of manufacture; and the object of theinvention is to provide a clip in the form of an elongated strip fashioned to form depending boundary walls, one end of the strip terminating in a ballor other bearing member, and the depending walls at the sides of the other end of the strip extending in the form of comparatively wide mounting portions cut out centrally to form pairs of prongs or lugs between which is a stop wall limiting inward movement of said end of the clip with respect to its support; a further object being to provide a clip of the class described which when attached to the support will have the end wall thereof in engagement with the support to maintain firm engagement with the support and to provide the desired spring tension to the clip and preventing loosening of the clip on the support in the use thereof;l a' further'object being to provide a clip of the class described, the Vprongs or lugs of which are so fashioned as to permit the forcible passage of the prongs through'supports composed of predetermined material; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified,
which is simple in construction, eficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.'
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in Which'the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a face view of a clip made according' to my invention shown attached to aI fountain pen cap.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the clip shown in Figs. to 3, detached, and showing a slight modification; and,
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a.
modification.
In practice, I provide a clip 10 fashioned from a strip of metal which is oifset to give a predetermined contour or design on the outer face 11 of the clip and to form downwardly extending side walls 12 and an end wall 13 forming a substantially channel-shaped strip terminating at its free end in a ball-shaped member 14, which when the clip is attached to a fountain pen cap or other support 15 tensionally engages the outer surface of the cap at all times, the ball serving to space the spring arm of the clip away from the cap'to facilitate attachment of the fountain pen 'to a pocket or the like.
The side walls 12 adjacent the end wall 1s inwalls 18 are at a slight angle with respect to the longitudinal line of the walls 12,' but as seen in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the Wall 18a isarranged parallel thereto.
With the device shown in Fig. 4, the lclip may be attached without engaging the wall 13 with the cap as in Fig. 2, or if desired, the clip of Fig. 4 may be mounted in the same manner as the clip shown in Fig. 2, in which event, therqorner portion 18h of the walls 18a will engage the cap 15 whereas the corner portions 18o will be arranged in spaced relation thereto. In .mounting the clips shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive in connection with a fountain pen cap 15, the cap will be provided with four apertures 19 spaced to receive the prongs or lugs 17, and these prongs or lugs are passed through the apertures 19 and are bent over by a suitable tool to engage the inner wall of the cap as seen at 20, note Fig. 3 of the drawing.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification of the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 3, wherein the prongs 17a are made pointed at their ends rather than rounded so as to permit th forcible mounting of the clip into and through the wall of a cap .such as the cap 15 without providing the apertures 19 therein. This result may be accomplished when using caps of predeterminedy material such as celluloid and like compositions and'by the use of suitable tools. Aside fro j the structure of the prongsl'la, the clip shown Fig. 5 is identical with the -clips shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, it being understood that the 'pointed prongs 17a', after piercing the wall of the support in connection with which they are mounted, will be turned or riveted over to retain the clip against displacement.
It will be understood that by channeling the clip or in other words forming the depending boundary walls thereon, I provide a strong and durable spring arm construction which will maintain its spring properties and perform the desired function at all times, and obviate to a large degree loo distortion of the spring arm. It will also be apparent that by using the two pairs of prongs or mounting lugs on the clip, a very rigid coupling of the clip to a support is insured and one which will prevent lateral movement or shifting of the clip in the support as well as displacement of the clip therefrom.
It will be understood that while I have shown a clip of predetermined contour and design, my
invention is not limited in this respect, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacriiicing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patwith and extending in alinement with the side walls of the body, and a stop wall intermediate the prongs and arranged below the side edges of said body to form stops for supporting that part of the Vclip adjacent the prongs in spaced relation to the surface of a support.
