PATENT OFFICE,
EDWARD F. WHITAORE, AND GEORGE T. WHITAORE, OF SAME PLAOE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part'of Letters Patent No. 177, [86, dated May 9, 1876; application filed April 19, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L WHITAORE, of East Rochester, Columbiana county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Whip- Socket, of which the following is a specification: 7
Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved whip-socket, and Fig. 2 a horizontal sectioniof the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide for carriages an improved whip-socket that allows the secure locking of the whip, so as to prevent theft of the same and theinvention con-' sists of a whip-socket with clamping-spring and locking-cam.
In the drawing, A represents a whip-socket of metal or other suitable material; B, the clamping-spring,which is riveted at the lower end to the inside of the whip-socket. The upper end of the spring Bis provided with a curved whip-binding clamp-piece, O, that is carried against the whip by a swinging eccentric cam, D. Cam D tllI'IlS 'b V means of a key in a suitable extension-casing, A, of the whip-socket, and enters througha slot, at, into the socket, so as to engage and press the spring firmlyon the whip. The slot at is of such length that the cam is prevented, when in locked position, from sprin-gingback so as to release the whip.
The spring clamps the whip in perfectly reliable manner in the socket, and secures the same thereby by a cheap and effective mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of a whip-socket, having interior clamping-spring and slot back of the same, with a swinging eccentric cam for looking or releasing the whip, substantially as specified.
