The present invention relates to tobacco boxes and has for its main object the provision of a box having a number of receptacles compactly arranged for positioning therein cigars, cigarettes, matches, chewing gum or other articles.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a box of the character indicated provided with means for attaching the box to automobile instrument board.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a box of the character indicated which would be provided with cigarette ejecting means. a

With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.

The invention comprises a substantially rectangular box embodying bottom 10, upright end walls 11 and 12, front-wall 13 and rear wall 14. Integrally formed with the rear wall 14, bottom 10 and one end wall 11 is block 15 which is positioned within the box and which occupies substantially one-fourth of the volume ofthe box. Said block 15 extends throughout the entire depth of the box and is provided with a plurality of bores 16 reaching down to the bottom 10, as seen on Fig. 2. Said bores 16 constitute pockets or receptacles for holding individual cigars.

from front wall 13 to rear wall 14 and crosses said longitudinal partition wall 17. Both of said partition walls 17 and 18 do not reach to the bottom wall 10 of the box, but rest upon block 19 which is positioned upon said bottom wall 10 and reaches upwardly to about one-half of the height of the box, as clearly seen on Fig. 1. Said partition walls 17 and 18 in conjunction with the adjacent side walls of the box will form four receptacles, two larger ones and both of equal size, as at 20, and two smaller receptacles adjacent end wall 12 incheated by 21. The bottom of said four receptacles will be the upper face of block 19. It is further observed that for maintaining partition wall 18 in position the lower end thereof is embedded within block 19 as at 22.

One of said receptacles 20 is intended for holding a box of matches, it substantially corresponding to the size of a match-box, while the other receptacle 20 contains a metallic box 23 for depositing ashes therein. The two smaller compartments 21 are intended for holding sticks of chewing gum, hairpins or the like.

Said box 23 has an outwardly flaring flange 24 which overhangs the adjacent upper edges of partition walls 17 and 18, front wall 13 and partition wall 25, the latter extending from front wall 13 to the free corner of block '80 15, and being positioned substantially in the. central portion of the box and reaching clownwardly to the bottom 10. It is noted that said partition wall 25 is shorter than the upright walls of the device and its upper end terminates immediately below the inner end of cover 26 presently described.

Said cover 26 is adapted to provide a closure for cigarette receptacle 2?, the latter resulting from block 15, partition wall 25, front wall 13, end wall 11 and bottom wall 10. Said cover 26 is positioned between said block 15 and front wall 13 and is adapted to remain flush with the upper face of block 15 and-up- 9 per end of front wall 13 when said closure is in closed position. date said free end of said closure 26 as clearly seen on Figs. 1 and 3.

The inner end of said closure 26 is adapted for pivotal swinging movement upon pin 28 which is passed through front wall 13 and closure 26 and is embedded in block 15.

Positioned upon the bottom wall 10 and adjacent block 15 is block 29 which extends from partition wall 25 to end wall 11. Said block 29 has a tapered face 30 by virtue of which construction said block assumes substantially a triangular formation on transverse cross-section, as plainly seen on Fig. 2. The bottom portion of said block 29 is cut away on transverse plane and longitudinally thereof and is spaced from front wall 13 whereby a space or channel 31 results which in width substantially corresponds to the width of one cigarette. Said compartment 27 is adapted to be filled with cigarettes and of the number of cigarettes in said compartment 27 one cigarette will always remain within space or channel 31.

In alinement with said channel 31 is recess 32 made in block 19 positioning therewithin plunger rod 33, the inner end of which rests within opening 34 made in partition wall 25 and communicating with channel-31, and through which said plunger rod 33 is adapted to shift within said channel 31 and act upon the cigarette remaining therewithin, as will be hereinafter described. Said plunger rod 33 at one point of its periphery is provided with collar 35, which normally is adapted to bear against the adjacent face of end wall 12, and by means of which the outward shifting movement of said plunger rod 33 from within the device is prevented, it being observed that said end wall 12 adjacent one of its lower corners is provided with an aperture permitting the sliding movement therewithin of said plung e1 rod 33.

Encompassing the portion of said plunger rod 33 remaining within the recess 32 and positioned between partition wall 25 and collar 35 is a coil spring 33 which at all times remains under an expanding tension, by means of which arrangement said coil spring 36 presses upon and bears against said collar 35 for maintaining said plunger rod 33 in a withdrawn inoperative position illustrated by full lines on i. The outer end of said plunger rod 33 is provided with head 37 by means of which said plunger rod may be manually shifted inwardly of the device and against the tension of spring 36 for bringing the inner end of said plunger rod 33 within channel 31, as indicated by do 50d lines on Fig. 1. The cigarette remaining within said channel 31 under the action of plunger rod 33 will be shifted in the direction of said lunger rod 33 and will pass through openmg 38 made in end wall 11 and remaining in the path of said channel 31. Thus any portion of the cigarette protruding through said opening 38 may be picked and manually withdrawn from said compartment 27. It is noted that in practice the length of said compartment 27 should correspond to the length of the cigarette. On releasing the manual pressure at head 37 plunger rod 33 under the pressure of spring 36 will shift in the oppoite direction and the inner end thereof will be withdrawn from within channel 31. Thereupon the succeeding cigarette will fall within channel 31. The tapered face 30 of block 29 will facilitate shifting and falling of the cigarette to said channel 31. The cigarettes are supplied to said compartment 27' by swinging cover 26 upon its pivot point 28, as indicated by dotted lines on Fig. 1. The inner end of said cover 26 snugly fits underneath the adjacent portion of flange 25% when said cover 26 is in closed position.

The device hereinabove described possesses many advantages adapting the same for use in automobiles, especially for the use of the driver who by using only one hand may withdraw either a cigar, cigarette or a match from the respective compartments of the box. For mounting the box within an automobile a J-shaped bracket 39 is provided which by its longer portion is attached to block 15 by means of screw L0. The free leg portion of said J-shaped bracket 39 carries screw 41 by means of which the device may be clamped to the lower edge of the instrument board. The front wall 13 has clamp 12 mounted upon said wall for holding an electric cigarette lighter.

lVhile there is described herein a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What we claim as new is:

A compartmented b0 having side bottom and end walls, a block integral with one side and end wall and spaced from the opposite side wall, said block having a plurality of article receiving recesses and occupying a substantial portion of said first mentioned side wall and of the interior of the box, partitioning means in the end area of said box which is remote from said block, one surface of said blocl: providing a sustaining means for one end of said partitioning means and also providing a wall of one of the compartments provided by said partitioning means, and another surface of the block providing a wall for another compartment of the box.
