EARNSHAW, 0F WYNNEWOOD, PENNSYL-- VANIA, LAND THREEAND ONE-HALF PER CENT T0 JAMES A. EMMONS, 0F MEBION,
PENNSYLVANIA DISPENSER FOR GIGARETTES AND CTHER RODLIKE BOD IES Application filed April is,
The principal object of the present invention is to provide for conveniently and re-i peatedly projecting the end portions of'one or more cigarettes or other rodlike bodies be-v yond the end portions ofthe others and-for exposing the end portions of the projected cigarette or cigarettes or other rodlike bodies for manual withdrawal. Another object of the invention is, in the case of cigarettes, to accomplish the above object while exposing the labels of the original package to view. Another object of the invention is to keep the contents of the package of cigarettes enclosed.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description at the end of which the invention will be claimed.
Generally stated, the invention comprises a dispenser for cigarettes or rodlike bodies having spacedstops for the ends of the bodies, said stops projecting the end portions of one or more of the cigarettes or bodies in respect to the end portions of the rest of the cigarettes or bodies. and one of said stops being movable to afford access to the end portions of the projecting bodies or cigarettes for the manual withdrawal of one or more of them.
The invention also comprises the improveme-nts to be presently described and finally claimed. 1
In the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dispenser embodying features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a like view showing the parts in another position, and
Figs. 3 to 6 are similar views illustrating modifications.
The dispenser is capable of embodiment in various forms of which some are illustrated. Referring toFig. 1, the dispenser or container is in the form of a rectangular frame open at the sides. The openings 1 at the sides expose the labels on a package 2 of cigarettes. There are spaced stops of which one, 3, is provided bya part of the hinged lid 4- and of which the other, 5, is provided by the bottom' wall of a cavity or recess provided in the lid.
In use a portion of the end of the package of cigarettes is removed leaving an opening 6 1930. Serial No. 445,538.
opposite the cavity in the lid. The lid serves to enclose the opening 6. If the contents of the dispenser be impelled towards the right the end portions of the rest of the cigarettes,
as indicated at a, and by opening the lid, Fig. access to the end portion of the projecting cigarette or cigarettes is afforded for the manual withdrawal ofone or more of them. Obviously when the dispenser is turned or moved towards the left in Fig. 1, any cigarettes, not removed, pass back into the package.
The construction of the modifications shown in the other figures are as above de scribed except as follows:
In Fig. 3 only the part of the lid that is provided with a cavity is hinged and the spaced or stepped stops are shown at 3 and 5 and the opening 6 is provided in the immovable part of the lid or cover.
In Fig. t the lid is hinged tothe long side of the frame and the spaced or stepped stops are shown at 3? and5 and the cigarettes are omitted.
In F 5 the spaced or stepped stops are shown at 8 and 5. The stop 3 is provided by a partition arranged in the hollow part of the n e stop 5911 the wall of that hollow part.
, In Fig. 6 the stop 3 is provided bya E51- fastened inthe top and arranged across-the mouth of the dispenser and the stop 5 is provided by the wallof the hollow part of thelid. Y a
There is, of course, an opening for the in sertion of the cigarettesor other rodlike bodies, or packagesthereof, in the receptacle or container preferably at the end to which the lid is hinged but in Fig. 3the' opening is in the bottom of the receptacle.
In the structure ofFig. 6 the stop 3 may be omitted and thepackage held back by other means, the untorn section or portion of the package serving as the stop 3.
It Will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement and matters of mere form Without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited to such inatters or otherwise than the prior art and the appended claims may require.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture a dispenser for rodlike bodies having spaced or stepped stops for the ends of the bodies, said stops limiting endwise projection of one or more bodies in respect to the rest of the bodies, and one of said stops being movable to afford unobstructed access to the end side of the projecting bodies for the manual Withdrawal of one or more thereof.
As an article of manufacture, a dispenser for cylindrical bodies having an indentation in one wall thereof into Which one or more of said cylindrical bodies may be projected endwise, and means for removing said indentation to expose the end sides of such bodies.
3. As an article of manufacture a container for the original package of cigarettes, said container being substantially closed and having an opening through which said package may be inserted into said container, a W ll for preventing the longitudinal movement of certain of said cigarettes, a Wall permitting limited longitudinal movement of other of said cigarettes and means. for removing said second mentioned Wall to permit unobstructed access to the end sides of the projecting cigarettes.
at. As an article of manufacture a rectangular container for cigarette packages. substantially closed and having an opening for the insertion of said package, means comprising a stepped surface in one Wall of said container to prevent axial movement of some of the cigarettes or said package and to permit longitudinal movement of other cigarettes, and means for removing said stepped surface to permit unobstructed access to the end sides of the projecting cigarettes.
5. As an article of manufacture, a dispenser for cigarettes having in one end Wall thereof an enclosed space into Which one or more of the said cigarettes may be projected longitudinally beyond the remaining cigarettes, and means for completely exposing the end sides of the said projected cigarettes.
6. As an article of manufacture, a container for cigarettes comprising a body portion having an opening in one end thereof, a lid adapted to close said opening and having a curved wall opposite said opening and spaced therefrom thus providing a cavity into Which some of the cigarettes. maybe projected, a hinge connecting said lid to said body portion, a spring stressing said lid to open position, and a latch for retaining said lid closed. 7. As an article of manufacture a container for an original package of cigarettes comprising a frame of U-shape in lateral cross-section and in side elevation, alid adapted to close the open end of the frame and having a cavity therein spaced from the end of the original package contained in said frame, a hinge connecting said lid to said frame, a spring stressing said lid to open position, and a latch for retaining said lid closed. 8. As an article of manufacture, a dispenser for cigarettes having an indentation in one end Wall thereof into Which one or more of said cigarettes may be projected endwise by gravity or inertia, and means for removing the Wall forming the indentation to completely expose the end sides of the projected ciga rettes.
