SMOKE-BELL ATTACHMENT For. CHANDELIERS.
No.176,353. Patented Anri118,1s7e
UNITED STATES PATENT GFEIGE.
GEORGE B. RIDDLE, OF ROCHESTER., NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO DANIEL SCANLIN AND WILLIAM MGOARTHY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKE-.BELL ATTVACHMENTS FOR CHANDELIERS.
.Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,353., dated April 18, 1876; application tiled March 10, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. RIDDLE, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Smoke- Bell Attachments for Chandeliers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation ot' a chandelier, showing my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the hanger or shaft, and a plan of the attachment on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the parts separated.
My improvement relates to a device attached to the hanger or shaft of a chandelier, for the purpose of supporting the smokebells over the lights.
rllhe invention consists in the construction and arrangement otl the smoke-bell attachnient, whereby it can be readily attached or detached, and is made self-clamping by the same means that secures the parts together, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a chandelier of any ordinary kind.v B is the han ger or shaft by which it is suspended. O is the attachment, secured to the hanger, to sustain the smoke-bells E E.
This attachment being clamped to the hanger, the smoke-bells will swing with the chandelier, and always retain their position over the lights. This obviates the difficulty heretofore experienced of the li gh ts swinging from under the smoke-bells where the latter are attached liXedly to the ceiling.
The collar or hub of the attachment is made in two parts, D D, which are clamped together by screws a. a, thereby enabling the collar to be applied around a lixed hanger without removing the latter, and also to be adjusted higher or lower on the hanger without difticulty. To enable the parts to be thus fitted together, the joint between them is formed with angular or beveled seats b c d, standing outward, as shown. The part Dl can be inserted or removed bodily and without binding. The perfect outline ot the hub is thus maintained. The part b of the section D is ot' wedge shape, and thc seat in which it iits in part D is of corresponding shape, which causes the wedge to bind closely against the hanger, thereby producing a clamping action, and obviating any danger of the hub slipping upon the shaft. The screws a a serve the double purpose ot' connecting the parts together and of clamping the hub to the hanger, avoiding the necessity of a separate set-screw or other device for the purpose. These parts can be easily cast and require no fitting.
By the means above described I connect the attachment to the hanger, so that it cannot get out of place from over the lights 5 and I also make it portable, so that it can be secured to or taken from the hanger without removing the latter.
The construction of the separate parts of the collar is such as to allow one part to pass bodily into the other, making, when in place, a complete ring, perfect in its outline.
This device may be applied to either lamp or gas chandeliers, and also to bracket-fixtures.
What I claim as new is- 1. The smoke-bell attachment C, having its hub constructed in two sections, D D', litting the hanger, whereby the attachment is made removable without removing the hanger, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The smoke-bell attachment O, with its hub constructed in two sections, D D', provided with the bevel-joints b c d, and connected by the screws a. a, in the manner and for the purpose specitied.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, GEO. B. RIDDLE.
Witnesses:
