BICYCLE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 692,383, dated February 4, 1902. Application filed May 17, 1901. Serial No. 60,684- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, PETER TARZIAN and MEGURDICH TARZIAN, citizens of the United States, residing in Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycles; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to bicycles; and its object is to provide the head portion of a bicycle with a casing adapted to inclose the lamp and bell and provided with a supplemental sounding device in the form of a reed instrument, the bell and said supplemental sounding device being provided with operating means arranged in a convenient and novel manner.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view showing our invention in position on a bicycle; andFig. 2 is an enlarged View of the invention, the same being partly in section and partly in elevation.
On the head Ct of the machine is clamped a bell or gong b and a lamp 0, the latter preferably above the former. Below the bell or gong is adjustably secured, by means of a setscrew d,which it carries, a support or base 6, which is substantially of the form of a disk. On this base or support is secured the casing f, which is shown in the drawings as representing the head of a goat. This may be constructed of papier-mach or other suitable light and durable material, which may be ornamented in any desired manner. In order to render the lamp and bell accessible, the easingf is made in two sections, being divided vertically, said sections being hinged together, as at g, and having a latch h at the top for securing them normally together.
2' designates the handle-bars. These are shown in the drawings as representing horns for the goat-head and penetrate openings j in the top of the casing f, being adjustably secured to the head 0; of the bicycle by means of bolts k.
The openings Zof the casing f, representin g nostril-openings, serve as air-ducts for the lamp 0, while openings at in the top of the head permit the escape of the smoke and other products of combustion from the lamp, the orifices n in the casing f, representing eyeopenings for the goat-head, being adapted to permit the light from the lamp 0 to escape, said lamp being situated directly back of them.
For the purpose of sounding the bell or gong 6 its actuating-lever 0 may have connected to it a cord or wire 10, which passes up through one of the horns and out the free end thereof, being there provided with a tassel or other form of pull g.
If desired, the contrivance may be provided with an additional alarm or sounding device in the nature of a horn, the same consisting of a reed r, secured over an opening sin the casing by a ring t, the said opening having a nipple a, receiving an elastic bulb n, which may be shaped and ornamented to represent the beard of a goat.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the head portion of a bicycle, of a disk mounted on said head portion, handle-bars carried by said head portion, and a hollow casing arranged on said disk and inclosing said'head portion and the parts of said handle-bars which form a joint therewith, said casing being divided substantially vertically thereof to form separable sections, and one of said sections being hinged to the other and having its line of hinge horizontally disposed, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 11th day of May, 1901.
PETER TARZIAN. MEGURDIOH TARZIAN.
