COLLAR FASTENER Filed May 6, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented June 10, 1930 PATENT ol-Fics WILTON RUBINSTEIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI COLLAR FASTENER Application filed May e,
rlhis invention relates to collar fasteners and has special reference to a construction and formation of a detached collar and a device for use in connection with the collar whereby the necessity of using a button or like Jfastener for holding the ends of the collar together is eliminated.
An object of the invention is to provide a shirt collar of the detached type having on one end means for engaging with a button in connection with lthe collar band, in combination with a device applicable to the collar for holding the ends in proper relationship and which permits free adjustment of the collar as to size.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved shirt collar having means on one end for engagement with a button on the neck band of a shirt and having a device in connection with the opposite end for engaging the opposite end of the neck band of the shirt and also for engaging the collar to hold the ends of the neck band and the collar respectively in proper relationship and which has sliding engagement with the collar to permitJ free expansion and adjustment of the collar.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fiexible and resilient tab'for use in connection with the ends of the collar for holding the collar in proper relationship without attachment of both ends of the collar to the neck band of the shirt.
Various other objects and advantages oi v5 my improved shirt collar will appear from the following description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which,
VFig. l is a View showing my improved 4collar in connection with the neck band of a shirt, the ends of the collar being spread apart to show the construction of. the inner side of the collar-band.
Fig. 2 is a view showing one end ot the collar attachedA to vthe button on the neck band of the shirt7 the other end ot the collar Abeing rolled away.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the manner in 5o which the tab engages the ends of the collar,
Serial No. 360,882.
' to the respective ends of the collar. 60
Fig. 6 is a View showing the tab engaging an adjacent end of the neck band of the shirt and also the end of the collar opposite from the end on which the tab is mounted.
Fig. 7 is a front view showing the collar in closed, position in which it will be retained by my improved tab.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view showing the ends of the neck band detached from each other but secured to the collar by my improved tab.
Fig. 9 is a side elevation ci my improved resilient tab.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. l to 4.-, inclusive, the collar ot the roll or turned down type comprising van outer section l and an inner section or band. The inner section or band comprises a ply 2, a ply 3 and a lining #l located between the plies 2 and The ply 2 near one end of the collar formed with a buttonhole 5 designed and adapted to be engaged with thc collar button 6 for holding together' the ends oli the neck band T of the shirt.
The ply 3 is 'formed with a slit 8 from which a pocket extends in a direction away from the end of the collar, said pocket being defined by stitches 9.
The opposite end of the collar as shown is not provided with any button hole for engaging the button G, although such, a. buttonhole may be included in the collar construction if desired. A slit l() is formed in theply 2, the same entering a pocket defined by stitches l1. Another slit l2 of greater length than the slit l0 enters the pocket formed by the stitches l1 between the slit l0 and the end row of stitches 13 Jfor the pocket. 100
and satisfactory manner.
and lower edges of the tab.
In use the tab is inserted into the pocket delined by the stitches 11, the narrow end of the tab being passed through the slit 12 and thence through between the rows of vstitches 11 and extending outwardly through the slit l0. The part 14; ofthe tab 'is too wide to pass through the slit 10 but may pass into the pocket through the slit 12. The shoulders 16 engage against theend of the pocket above and below the ends of the slit 10 and prevent the tab from slippino" out. The opposite end of the tabpre erably extends' beyond the slit 12 so that it will not work out, although this latter arrangement is not essential because the tie will prevent the tab from working out through the slit 12. The projecting end 15 of the tab is then inserted through the slit 8 into the pocket formed by the stitches 9. This tab is quite liexible and yet is of sufiicient stiffness to support the ends of the collar in proper and neat form and prevent them from sagging. It permits the collar to be adjusted as to size and the collar will be prevented by the tie from expanding beyond the desired size. The tab is easily insertable and withdrawable and should be removed before the shirt is laundered.
In the ,embodiment shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, the collar is of precisely the same construction as that above described and like reference numerals are applied thereto. As there shown, the collar button 6 may bc engaged in the buttonhole 5 but the opposite end of the neck band of the shirt is not engaged with said button (l but is provided with a loop 17 through which the end 15 of the tab is passed. Thus, when the ends of the collar are connected together and with the ends of the neck band of the shirt, the neck bands of the shirt are not connected by the button 6 but are freely adjustable with the collar as to size. lVhen the collary is connected by inserting the tab 15 in the loop 17 and inconnection with the opposite end of the collar, 4all of the parts will be held in proper relationship and the collar will be prevented fromexpanding beyond the desired shape by the tie.
From the foregoing it must be apparent that the invention obtains all of its intended objects and purposes in a highly eflicient Obviously, the
invention may be varied within equivalent limits without departure from the Vnature and principle thereof.
I donot restrict myself unessentially in any particulars, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a collar, means forming a pocket near one end of the collar, said pocket having spaced slits therein opening to the inide of the collar, a tab insertable in and withdrawable from said pocket and arrangedlto have one end projecting beyond the end of the collar, and means forming a pocket in the opposite end of the collar with a slit opening outwardly for receiving the projecting end of said tab.
