HAND OR FINGER GRIP Application led March 2, 11928., Serial No. 258,465.
This invention relates to hand or nger grips and particularly to devices ofv this class for use in connection with the lower sash of windows; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified, which will eliminate the necessity of mortising or otherwise cutting out the window sash frame as is customary with other devices of this class and which further io will be contained substantially within the boundaries of the sash frame so as not to interfere with screen frames, shadesand the like; a further object being to provide a device `of the class specified which may be quickly and easily attached to the frame an'd detacliably supported in connection therelwith to facilitate the cleaning or painting' of the sash frame'or the cleaning of ther` window panel in the frame; a still further 2o object being to provide a device of the class specified which may be fashioned from a single sheet metal blank folded into the desired form; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and forthe purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efhcient vin use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. VThe invention is fully disclosed in the 3o following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in Y each of the views, and in which:

In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, 5 represents the lower rail of the frame of a window sash 6, in which a glass panel 7 is supported. In Fig. 1, I have shown two of my improved hand or finger grips 8 consisting in the construction shown of stamped, forged. or cast liodiescomprising an attach-1 ing plate part 9 having a number of screwV holes through which screws 10 are passed in securing the device to the inner face of the railV 5. At the upper end of the plate '9 is an outwardly, upwardly and inwardly curved hood portion 11 having end walls 12 forming a substantially box-shaped eXtension, the opening 13 of which is directed inwardly. This opening is adapted to receive the lingers of a hand to facilitate the raising and lowering of the sash 6.
The construction shown in Fig. 1 elimi- Y,nates the necessity of mortising out or otherwise recessing the lower rail 5 of the sash frame to receive devices of this kind as is the common practice, which practice in addition `to being costly and requiring the work of a skilled mechanic also tends to weaken the rail and in most forms of devices, the projecting lip or flange of the finger piece extends a material distance inwardly beyond the inner face of the rail 5, and thus comes in contact with screens, shades and other window accessories. In Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have shown a sheet metal blank consisting of four elongated, rectangular body portions 21, 22, 23 and 24. The body portion 21 has laterally directed extensions 25 having flanged ends 26 foldable angularly with reference to the parts 25 on the lines 27, the parts 25 being angular with reference to the part 2l on the lines 28, whereas the parts 21, 22, 23 and 24 are foldable angularly with reference to each other on the lines 29, 30 and 31. When the device is completely folded, a hand or finger piece such as shown at 32, Fig. 3 of the drawing is formed. The part 24 of the blank forms the attaching plate of the device, the same having screw hole apertures 33. The part 23 forms a bottom wall of the hood portion 34 of the device, the part 22 the back wall of said hood portion, the part 21 the top wall, and the extensions 25 the side walls. The flanges 26 are foldable inwardly;upon the bottom wall 23 and may be secured thereto by riveting, welding or in any other desired manner. It will also be understood that the attaching plate 24 may extend as indicated in dotted lines 35, Figs. 3 and 4 to permit of the attachment of the device in the manner shown in Fig. 2, in which event, the screw holes 33 will not be employed.
It will be understood that my invention is not necessarily limited to any specific cross sectional form of the device herein shown and described nor to the specific means of attachment thereof or manner of constructing the same, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein set out may be made within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters, Patent, is
A linger grip for Window sash rails comprising a nger receiving portion adapted to be arranged above and extend inwardly beyond the inner face of the rail, and an attaching plate part extending from one side of the lirst named part and adapted to be arranged on the inner face of said rail, said first named part comprising a hood portion, the inner face of which is in aline- VILLIAM F.
