J. E. AHLviN JAMB FASTENING Filed June -12, 1919 Patented Oct. 9, 19u23.
^ UNITED STATES .e l 1,4ia251 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. AHLVIN, OFIJOLIET, ILLINOIS.
` JAMB FASTENING.
.Application led June 12, 1919. .Serial No. 303,682.
.fication 'This invention relates toymeans for attaching door-iframes, window-frames and the like to the studding` or wall of a building; and the primary object is to provide a simple construction whereby the j amb 'or `framemembermay be readily and securely .attached to the Wall or framing of the building, the inventiontacilitating the work of squaring the Window-frame, or door-frame,
as thecase may be.
The invention is illustrated in its preerred embodiment in Athe. accompanying drawing,` in' which.-
.'Fig. lrepresents alplan view of an im- -provedjamb-fastening device employed;
views showing a modification.
Fig. 2, an edge elevational View of the same.; Fig. 3, a horizontalsectionalvview of the vertical member. of adoor-jamb or frame with the improved attachment secured thereto; Fig. 4, a broken horizontal sectional view showing the frame of a wall and =a vertical jamb or trame member secured thereto. by means ot lthe improved iiastcningwdevice; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7.,
.ln the construction illustrated, A reprci' sents the studding or wall of a building; B,
a iamb or frame set in an opening in the Vwall; and C, my improved jamb-attaching "shearing the metal at the lateral edges of the member along diagonal lines and bending the metal at right angles to the member l, thus forming pointed teeth. The teeth 2 and 4 are spaced the-same distance from the ends of the member 1; and the end-portions l;L of the member 1 are provided near their attached ends, or lbaser-portions, with hoole shaped members 5, cach having a shank 5l .forming an acute. angle with the plane of the member 1. and a pointed extremity :5" forming substantially a right-angle rwith the shank 5a. rhe members 5 arethus hookshaped members havingV theirpointcd pou tions directed. towards each other some.- what, as indicated in Fig. 2, thatis, the hooks are bent away from the extremities of the member 1. Said hooks may be formed by shearing the metal of the endportions 1LL of the bar along convergent lines, so as to cut out a portion o' the metal at an.A intermediate point, except for the .base-fend, which is left unsheared, the metai being struck vor forced :tromv the plane oi the member 1 and bent to form hooks.
The ends l@L of the member 1 are prof vided with perforations, adapted to rccoive nails. p Y p In the use ot the improved 'fastening dcvice, for the purpose of setting a loor-frame in its opening and enabling the door-frame to be readily squared and attached, a num ber of the devices C are irst secured to the back-side ofthe iamb member B, the fas tcning members C being located at diitercnt heights. l Crdinarily,`three ot the members C will Suffice for a door ot' ordinary height. The brads 2, 3 and L are driven into the rear-side of the member B, and the pointportions 5b ol the members 5 are driven intoV the edges o'l the member. B. The angular brads 5" may be driven into the edges of the board B by hammering'upon the elbow-portions of the brads. After a number of the fasteners C have been applied to each vertical board B of the door-frame, the door-I frame is set in place in the door-opening, and the projecting end-portions l are bent at right angles to the body of the bar and away from the jamb B, so as to embrace the wall A. rlhe ends of the 'fastening-mein ber are then secured to the wall by means of nails 7 which pass .through the openings 6. After the fastening member is secured both to the door-t`rame and to the wall, it constitutes, in eii'ect, a U-shaped bracket connecting the door-frame to the wall, the r web-portion of the U-shaped bracket having the integral securing-brads which enter the frame member B at its rear side and lateral edges.` The face-plates of the j amb, or the trim, may be applied after the doortrarne has been secured in its openin The It may be observed that inasmuch as the 'fastening members may be secured to the janib member B before the door-'traine is inserted in thel \vall-o1 ening, it is a very easy matter, after the end-portions Aifhave been bent so as to embrace the wall, to drive the nails 7 asthe operation 'ot squaring the doorraine proceeds. Thus, with the improved fastening device, a workman may easily set a Vdoor-franie, or a window-frame, square `the frame and secure' it in position, preparatory to applying the wall-trim. Y Y
If desired, the jemb-ia-stener may be formed in two parts, and applied as shown .in Fig. 7. Thus, C and C2 represent the two parts, or membersin this modification The tivo parts are similar und coinplen'iental, each being otsoi'newbat rless thanhalt oi the lei'igth of the IneniberC. The member C' is shownfinj'plan and edge elevation in Figs. 5 and 6, respectively. Each of said members iis provided with attaching prongs which are numbered the vsanie as the corre` spending partsV of the member C. 'In this case, hon-ever, 'each of the' members CA and C2 is provided with brads or prongs 3 which correspond with lthel brads 3 of the 4member C. The body portionsy ofthe members are provided vwith perforations 8, which may reeeiv'e nails, or screws, 9. This two-part tastener is adapted to vwalls of varying thickness.' AThe foregoing detailed description has been given for cle'a'rness oiunder-standing only, andA no unnecessary `limitation should lie-understood therefrom.
`Vhat I renard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A fasteningr device for the purpose set forth comprising a sheet metal'bar equipped with an int-egally formedbradjprojecting vat ri ght angles to the bar, `and equipped also, with an elbow-forn bradintegral with the bar, saidbar having an extremity projecting beyond said elbow-form'brad and adapted iorattaclnnent to e wall, said extremity being disposed substantially at right anglesA jectingr substantialiv yat right-angles vto the Y bar-portions and provided also with elbow-l form brads Aformed integrally with thefbar portions, "said `ber-portions having extremities projecting beyond said elbo'wLformbrads and adapted to be secured to a wall.
l5. Fastening meansior the purpose set forth, comprising,r sheet-metal strip-portionsV to the body ot' said bar, and said elbow-form l having lateral edge-portions 'sheared and the' v ,Y
metal ben'tiit right-angles to the strip-poi`` tions to form brads, said stripportions having also elblo\vforn1`brads positioned inter mediately between the lateral edges-ofthe strip-portions and so1ne distance lfrom the extremities, 'said elbow-'formy breds beingr formed by punching the'nietal through and the extremities of' thestrip'portionsbeing prfoyided with nail-receiving perforations. 4. A faste-.ning device fo'r'the purpose set forth," comprising sheet nieta-l member equippedwith integrally formfed `brads prol j'ecting at substantially Vright `angles to Aseid member and provided alsowith'an elbovif form bred `,formed integrally with" the sheet metal member, said sheet metal member heving 'an extremity projectingv beyond'said elbow-form brad to a wall.
