Description

VANITY CASE 9 Filed Nov. 15, 1928 F3TFEl 7 l NVENTOR 54ml 5mm ATTORN EY Patented May 27, 1930 UNITED STATES PA NT; orricn EDWIN :r. SCHWABE, or FAR nooKAwAY, Lone Isnaivnilvnw YORK j VANITY CASE My invention relates to vanity cases, variously designated as vanity boxes, make-up boxes and the like, and commonly used by ladies and girls and also by theatrical performers, independently of sex, for holding various cosmetics, facial preparations, hair dressings, perfumes and similar articles.
My invention relates to fancy boxes of the general type here contemplated, whether used as vanity cases or otherwise.
More particularly stated, I seek to so construct the vanity-case as to accomplish a number of distinct purposes, among which are the following:
First, to render the lid of the box entirely separate from the body portion thereof, thus avoiding the necessity for hinges or their equivalent. 7
Second, to render the lid reversible relatively to the body portion of the box, and removable therefrom, for use as a separate article, and particularly as a hand mirror.
Third, to enable the lid to be swung open and closed after the manner of a lid mounted upon hinges, and to be rested in open position and at a suitable angle to the body portion of the box, after the manner of a hinged lid and used in that position as a mirror.
Fourth, to give the parts such construction as to avoid the necessity for using hardware in the make-up of the device.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like reference characters inclicate like parts throughout the several figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved vanity case, showing it as closed and the lid as with its ornamental face upward, the lid appearing as partly broken away.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the Vanity case, the lid being reversed in position relatively to its location in Figure 1, so as to display to good advantage its mirror face.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 4 is a section on the same line as Figure 3, but showing the lid as raised and as resting upon one of its edges, and thus capable of use as a mounted mirror.
I in Figure 1, and w Figure 5 is a fragmentary section corre-i spondingto the right side of Figure 4, the lid not being shown. p Figure 6 is a perspective of the lid, showin it used alone as a hand mirror. 1 a A box member is shown at 7, and-1s provided with a-bottom 8 and with one or more partitions-9. The box member 7 is further provided, adjacent itsupper edge and parallel thereto, with a rabbet 11,,extending nearly three-quarters of the way around its upper: interior portion. The rabbet 10 merges into a pair ofnotches 11', shown more particularly in Figures 1,. 4 and5. I
The box member 7 isfurther provided with a rabbet 12, extending lengthwise of the box, from one of the notches ll'to the other, but at, a level somewhat lower thanthatof the rah betlO.
A lidforthe box member is shown at 13, and carries a loop 14, made of iribbon, cloth, fancy leather or other light and fiexiblematerial, so as to serve as a handle for manipulationofthelid. v r Thelid 13, is further provided with'an' or-. namental face 15, shown more particularly ith a mirror face 16,-shown in Figures 2 and 6. p a i The lid 13 is entirely separate from the box member 7, and is so arranged thatby aid of the loop 14 it may be swung upwardly and rested upon one of its edges, as indicated in Figure 4, or may be lowered into the position. indicated for it in Figure 1 Again, it may be turned around so as to display-Ito advantage its mirror face 16 insteadof its ornarnentalface 15,-as indicatedin Figure 2.- With the -lid13 in the position indicated for it in- Figure 1, if the operator grasps the loop 14 and raisesthe lid, the latter can be brought to rest upon its edge as, indicated in Figure 4. The edge portion of'the lid, immediately adjacent the notches 11, 11, moves obliquely downward into these notches, so that most of the weight of the lid now rests upon the rabbet 12. When thisoccurs, the lid assumes a stable position, for the reason that the boundaries of the notches 11, '11 are engaged by the adjacent an the appearance of being grilled, as shown in Figure 1, though this is not essential to my I V therein without departing from my invengular portion of the lid 13, so that the lid is well supported and braced in its new position, as may be understood from Figure 4. As is obviousfrom this figure, if the lid 13 has any tendency to fall or to roll over to the right, according to this figure, any such tendency is defeated bythe fact that anysuch rolling or turning movement must cause the sharp edge of the lid to press firmly against the rounded boundary of the notches 11, 11, thussupportingvthe lid in'a position of stability. 7 7
With the parts in the position indicated for them in Figure 4 and as just described,
the lid may be used as a mounted mirror, the
mirror face 16 being suitably displayed-for this purpose. If now the lid be loweredor swung downward so as to close the box as vindicated in Figure 1, the ornamental face 15 will be displayed to advantage.
The lid may be picked up by hand and removed bodily from thebox, and used as a handmirror, as indicated in Figure 6.
, Sometimes by way of variety, it may be desirable to rest the lid in position uponthe box, with its mirror side 16 upward, as indicated in Figure '2. In this event the lid may be raised and loweredasbefore.
As may be noted from the construction of my device, no hardware need be used inputting together the various parts.
The frame of the lid 13 is preferably rendered ornamental, for instance by giving it invention, i V, a I
,I do not limit myself to the precise con struction shown, as variations'may be made tion,' the scope of which is commensurate with my claim. Nor do I limit myself to any particular use for my box, as the same may be used in other ways than-as a vanity case.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows: i
i A vanity case comprising an open box and ajlid separatefrom said box and. detachably fitted thereupon, said lid being adapted to swing upwardly and to rest upon one of its edges, said box being provided with a rabbet extending lengthwise of the box and with another rabbet extending crosswise of the box, said rabbets being located at difl'erent levels, said box beingalso provided with a notch into which said rabbets merge, said notchand said rabbets being so located that said lid may rest fiat upon one of said rabbets thus closing the box, or may rest with one of its edges in said notch and in engagement with the other of saidrabbets.
j Signed at Vienna, Austria,,this 30th day of October, 1928,
a V I EDWIN J.
