Patented May 20, 1930 Hernan FRAME v .Applicaf'imiea Deember 31,1928.' seria'lno. 329,352. `r
It is the object of my invention to provide a demountable picture-frame of sturdy, simple, and inexpensive construction, that will A permit the ready insertion and removal of 5 pictures, and that will provide a firm attachment for the hacking (usually cardboard) which lies behind the picture., proper andrei inforces the frame. Y. y y y In carrying out my invention, I provide a frame which is openvalong one edge, desirably along the bottom, and which in a rectangular frame has three other edges, desirably formed b ytwo upright sides anda top ;"and1removably mount the open edge of thisA frame in a groove in a member which thus closes such open edge and which desirably also serves asa base to support the frame and picture. The inner edges of the sides andtop of the frame kproper are grooved to receive the cardboard backing, the picture, and the glass behind whichthe picture lies. The groove inthe vbase isdesirably slightly canted, so that at the back it is deeperthan atthe front; which permits they framel proper to slant slightly backward at the top,'fas y,is desirable in a standing picture-frame. y I-Ieretofore, there has been diiculty inpicture frames of this general type" in that the cardboard backing came loose veryl easily. This ypermitted relative movement between the sides and the top of'theframe, becauseV of lthe. removal ofv the stifeningy eiifect of the cardboard backing, and oftenresulted in the collapse of the frame.y
To obviate this, I providea morefirm support for the cardboard backing. I- desirably do this by two eaturesin combination; al-
thou h either may be used separately. Y These two eatures are: i
A lo 1. The .inward extension of the rearlip,
against which the back of theV cardboard backing lies, toward the `center of the frame slightly beyond the lip at-the front ofthe frame, to provide extra surface against which the back of the cardboard may be glued.
'i 2. v The provision of a sub-groovel which receives the edgefof only the cardboard backi g, land thus supports the cardboard-backing infront as well as behind. f Y
'Either or both Qf these 'features my' te closed; but is temporarily closed by a base so that the frame andl pictureslant slightly i fall out.,

V2 showing the preferred structure; and Fig. 60
6` is arfragmentaly perspective view, showing howthe picture and glass are put into and taken out of placein the frame.
In the illustrative construction ishownthe.f frame proper is rectangular, consisting of two side members 10 and 11 and a top member 12, so that these three members 10, 11, and 12 lform .approximately yan inverted Ug. The
lower end of this structure is not permanently .1
member 13, which also serves as a support for the device asa whole'. The base member 13 has a length at least equal to the ,widthof the picture-frame; and a width, yfrom front -v to back, sufficient to give stable support to the approximately upright frame. The base 13 has a groove 14 extending along it, and this A groove 14 has its sides substantially perpendiculartoits bottom and is slightly cantedr` backward toward the top. Thegroove 14 is desirably of such width between its sidewalls that it provides a rictional grip on the lower endsy of. the side members l() 'and 11 ofthe frame; to permit such side members to be in- 5 serted into and taken out of thegroove fairly Y easily butV yet to grip such side members sufcientlyiirmlyI so that they will not readily The inner edges of sideimembeis 10 .No
,andflland of the top 12 are grooved'to re-A ceive the edgesof a picture 15j; the edges of a backing 16which is usually of cardboard; and the edges of a glass 1 7, which' lies in ,front of the ,picture 15 in the, usual way with 95 picture frames. The .picture 15, and desirably'the glass 17, may be slid intoand; out of the open or lower,V end of" the frame 105411-12, after irst separatingsuch Yframe Ifrom thebase 13; but are retained in the 10U VY2,v
