'Be it known that I, Monms H. HARTZELL. a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county ofPhiladelphia, State 5 of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Folding Umbrella, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a folding umbrella (or parasol), the same having its ribs formed of sections Which are connected by hinge or pivotal joints which retain the ribs lirmly in operative position in the open condition of the umbrella (or parasol),

and which permit certain sections of thc ribs to be readily and properly folded one with the other, without the employment of springs for holding purposes.

It consists also of novel means for stifteningand strengthening the pivotal joints of the sections of the ribs and retaining said j means iirmly in position on the respective members of said joints.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the 1mportant instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shovvn and described.l as long as they are Within the scope of the claims.

Figure l represents a side elevation of a portion of an umbrella frame 1n open condition embodying my invention.

Figure 3 represents a side elevation of the members of the joint of the section on an enlarged scale.

Figures 6 to 9 inclusive represent perspective views of detached members of the device embodying my invent-ion.

Referring to the drawings.

l designates a rib of an umbrella, the same being formed of sections 2 and 3 which are connected by the pivot 4 whereby the sections form a continuity of each other in the normal condition of the rib as shown Serial No. 615,505.

' in Figure l, and the section 2 may be folded brought together for the purpose, said ears 8 and Z having openings 9 therethrough for i the insertion of the pivot 4 which is headed on the ears 7, thus forming a hinge of the sections. Furthermore, the sides of the ears 7 are inturned forming lips 7* which are adapted to bear resiliently against the adjacent side portions of the ears 8, thus pro-A viding a friction joint for said ears and consequently for the sections, serving to hold the sections firmly in the operative position in the open condition of the umbrella and avoiding the use of springs for the purpose as heretofore practiced.

0n the pivotal terminals of the ears 8 are the shoulders l() which are adapted to abut the adjacent portion of the sleeve 5 as a stop for limiting the upward motion and position, of the section 2 in the open condition of the umbrella, as most plainly shown dotted in Figure 4.

lVithin the ears S and the sleeve 6 and clamped by the same is the member 14 consisting of a plate of metal or other suitable material which extends in the longitudinal direction of the rib and is seated in the channel of the section 3 thereof. One end l5 of said member 14 has therein the opening 16 for the passage therethrough of the pivot 4. The other end thereof has thereon the eye 1.7 for connection. of the cover of the umbrella, said eye abutting the adjacent end ofthe sleeve 6 and this with the pivot retains said member rmly in position and vastly stiffens and strengthens said sleeve 6 and ears 8, and consequently one member of the hinged joint of the sections.

Vithin the ears 7 and the sleeve 5 and clamped by the same is the member 18 consisting of a plate of metal or other suitable material which extends in the longitudinal direction of the rib and is seated inthe channel of the section 2 thereof.

One end of said member 18 has thereon the tongue 19, and thcothcr end thereof has thereon the eye 2O for connection of the cover of the umbrella, Said eye and tongue being adapted to abut the relative ends ot the sleeve 5 and so being firmly retained in position, thus vastly stiening and strengthening said sleeve 5 and ears 7, and consequently the other member of the hinged joint of the sections, it being' evident that the sections are firmly connected by said joint and so held in proper positions when the umbrella is opened as in Figure l.

In folding the umbrella, the section 2 is folded on the section 3, it turning on the pivot il, 'the parts then assuming the positions as shown in Figure 2, the cover then folding on the sections, as usual in such cases.

Having` thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a rib for a folding` umbrella formed of sections, sleeves on the sections, and ears on the sleeves, and a .pivotal connection for said ears, the ears of one of said sleeves having thereon inturned lips which are adapted to engage resiliently with the ears of the other sleeve 'forming a friction joint Jfor the sections in the open condition ofV the umbrella.
