IMPROVEMENT IN PORTAB LE WASH-STANDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 75,475, dated March 28, 1876; application filed February 26, 1876.

. water and sewer pipes of the city, but supplied Wi'th portable reservoirs of lively clean water for use, and waste-water reservoirs that can easily be filled and emptied, as required, at less expense than those now in use connected with the water and sewer pipes, and without the foul and poisonous gases that are generated in the sewers and emitted into said rooms, and, being inhaled into the system, cause much of the sickness and epidemics that so much and often infest our cities and towns.

My invention is shown in the accompanying drawings. Figure 11s a perspective view of a stand, M, with a reservoir or cistern, 0, on top, as is shown by dotted lines, 1 l, as may in some cases be used, the doors of the stand being closed. A corner is broken at 2 to show the position of the reservoir 0 when placed under in the stand, in which case a pump is used to raise the water up from the reservoir 0 to the basin f,-f0r use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the stand M, showing the elevating and lowering stool or stand on which the waste-reservoir w is set. Fig. 3 is a view of the elevating-stool, showing the legs or supports 1) b, which are attached to the bottom 01, instead of the top A, as is shown in Fig. 2. Fig. at shows a pump, K, for elevating the Water from the reservoir 0 to the basin f, for use.

The wash-stand M may be constructed of any material and in any style, open or closed, with a reservoir of water, 0, placed on top, as C, Fig. 1. In this case there is no pump used; only the waste-reservoir 20, which is placed on the elevating-stool A, as shown in Fig. 2, which is so constructed that its top A can be elevated and lowered. It is fastened to the stand M at the bottom. The top is of any diameter desired, to which is attached three (more or less) legs or supports, 1) b, that slide up or down through slotted or cylindrical rests or stays 0 c and the bottom of the stool d. The top A is raised by a lever, e, hinged to the top A and bottom d, so as to raise the waste reservoir 10 up under and against the bowl f,'and hold it there securely and steadily till lowered, as is shown by dotted lines 9 g, thus preventing the reservoir to being filled to overflowing. The lever e rises up so far and is so shaped as to permit the door of the stand to close when the reservoir 10 is in its place, and is down so the door cannotbe closed when said reservoir is out, as is shown by dotted line This is so arranged that the neglect to replace the reservoir is readily seen,

and thus a flow of waste-water on the floor and carpet is prevented. The legs I) b are set at any angle desired to carry the reservoir w back, or to bring it forward to the front of the stand to be easier moved and replaced.

Fig. 3 shows the legs or rests b b of the stool A attached to the bottom 01, instead of the top A, as is shown in Fig. 2. The legs or supports b b may, all or in part, be attached to the top A'or bottom d, as is desired.

Figs. 4., 4 show the pump K and attachments. 4" is a top view, with the top removed to show the position of the wing m and valves o o, and pipe .9 and valve-boxes p p. The pump K is submerged and attached to the bottom of the reservoir 0. It is cylindrical, and of any diameter desired, and may be constructed of wood or metal, in whole or in part; or it may be earthen, or of porcelain.

The wing m is securely fastened to the piston-rod n, which is worked by a handle, 0, on top of the stand. '12 12 show two sets of valves attached to triangular boxes p 10, that slide into the pump K at'tli'e slides or slots q g, which hold them secure in their places, and

occupy about one-fifth, more or less, of the spacein the cylinder. The top or bottom of this cylinder-pump is movable, to permit the wing m and valve-boxes p p to be removed and replaced.

When the wing in moved one of the valves v is opened to receive water, while the other '2; is closed by the pressure of the water in the cylinder, and the upper valve o is opened, and

the water forced up into the basin f through the pipe 8. The handle 0, that worksthis pump, is so placed that the end is against the back of the stand at t, (dotted line,) when the wing m is at the valve-boxes p 1), ready to be carried round to raise the water for use. This is so arranged that the said wing m may not be injured by being forced against the valveboxes p p. The pipe 8 may be flexible, of rubber, or metallic.

I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The elevating-stool, having guides b, in combination with the hinged lever e, wastereservoir w, and basin f, substantially as and for the purpose described.
