IMPROVEMENT lN INSECT-POWDER PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,448, dated March 28, 1876 application filed March 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN N. GERARD, of Elizabeth, Union county, and HORACE J. J A- UITH,of Jersey City, Hudson county, State of. New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Packing Insect-Powder, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to that class of de vices known as bellows-boxes or insect-powder guns, and the method of packing the powder as a commodity of commerce, and it consists in combining the powder-package and the bellows or blowing devices in one apparatus, instead of being separate devices,- as is usual, the construction, application, and operation of which will be herein fully pointed out and described.
In the drawings, which form an essential part of this specification, Figure 1 is aplan view of a bellows-box and powder-package in which is fully embodied our invention. Fig. 2 is a left-hand end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pasteboard blank which forms the base upon which the box is formed. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same with spring and ejecting tube or nozzle attached. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the nozzle or ejecting-tube. Fig. 6 is a reverse view of the base of the same, and Fig. 7 is a view of a modification of the ejecting-tube shown in Fig. 5.

The object of our invention is to combine and consolidate the usual package of insectpowder and the powder gun or bellows for applying the same into a single apparatus, the entire package and bellows-box being of such cheap form of construction that it can be sold for the same price as that obtained for the package of powder alone. This invention will obviate the necessity of charging and recharging the ordinary apparatus, and provides the powder for instant use at all times.
In carrying out our invention we form, by stamping or cutting with dies, from ordinary 'pasteboard of suitable thickness, a blank to be used as the body or base upon which to form the bellows-box and package. This blank has two creases, a 12, formed near its center, which divide the blank into three divisions, A forming the end, B the top, and U the bottom, of the box when finished. At the center of the division A is cut a circular opening, 0, into which is inserted a conical tube, which forms the orifice through which the powder is ejected. Near the center of the division B, forming the top, is formed another and larger cir. ular opening, 1', provided for the purposes, as will be hereinafter fully set forth. This pasteboard blankis bent into the form shown in Fig. 4, and a spring, D, is inserted between the top B and bottom (J. G is a conical tube, tapering to a point, as shown. It is formed from tin or other cheap sheet metal, out to proper shape, and bent into the'ta-pering tube form, the seam being soldered to prevent leakage. It has a foraminatcd base, 9, larger than its own base, which is also formed of sheet metal, and soldered to the base of tube G. This tube G is inserted through the circular opening 0 in the blank, (from the interior,) and forced until i the base 9 rests against the pasteboard, as shown in Fig. 4, and the pressure of the paper holds and retains it in that position. After the spring D and tube G are attached to the pasteboard blank the top and bottom are compressed to a proper rectangular form, and a covering of muslin (which has previously been well sized, so as to hold powder) is pasted over the entire blank, thus forming the sides and rear end of a flexible material.
In covering the blank with muslin the opening i in its top is left open. The charge of powder is then inserted through the opening 11, and the top and bottom of the package covered with paper (which closes the opening "6) and labels, or ornamented in any desired manner. The front end is also covered with paper,

to assist in retaining it in place. The tube G may have a base, It, extending below the perforated base, and provided with a screwthread, by means of which it may be screwed into the opening 0 from the front after the box is completed. Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'1. An insect-powder package and bellows, formed of a single pasteboard blank, provided with suitable spring and ejecting tube or nozzle, the whole covered with sized muslin, and arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes as herein shown and set forth.
