PACKAGE FOR PU LVERIZED SUBSTANCES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,521, dated August 23, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JULIUS BINA, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, and a resident of Fiirth, in the Kingdom of Bavaria and Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages for Pulvern ized Substances, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved package for pulverulent substancessuch as snuff and the likewhich are to be kept in moist condition during use, the package having the advantage that it can be used directly for taking snuff and does not require the removal of I 5 the same from the package into a separate receptacle, it containing a sufficient quantity to last for some time; and the invention consists of a package for snuff or similar pulverulent substances, Which is made in the form of a pyramid and provided with a slot or opening at the apex that is closed by a spring-key and on the removal of which the contents can be gradually removed in small quantities by shaking the package. For shipping the pack- 2 5 age, the same is inclosed in an exterior wrapper or paper, which extends over the key, so as to hold the same in position, the apex of the wrapper being perforated near the point where the key is located,.so as to permit the ready removal of the apex of the Wrapper without destroying the entire wrapper.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved package for pulverulent articles, showing the 3 5 same inclosed in a wrapper. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same, shown with parts broken out and the end of the wrapper removed, so as to give access to the interior of the package. being, like the body, made of sheet metal, pasteboard, wood, or other suitable material, and being retained when in loose condition on the body by means of a wrapper D, that is made a shape to correspond to the shape of the body of the package and pasted over the same, the sides of the wrapper being printed with a suitable trade-mark, name of manufacturer, directions for use, &c. The narrow apex of the bodyAforms a slotted opening (I, through which the contents of the package are removed when the same are to be used. The slot in the apex of the package is closed by means of a spring-key O, that is bent of suitable sheet metal and inserted into the slot. It is also retained in position for shipping the package by the apex of the wrapper, which extends over the key, the wrapper being provided at some distance from its apex and near the place where the rounded-off head of the key is located with perforations a, that facilitate the removing of the end of the wrapper when it is desired to use the contents of the package.

In the drawings the package is shown in inverted position and ready to remove some of the contents through the opening at the apex of the same after the key is removed.

My improved package has the advantage that the articles to be placed into the same can be conveniently inserted. This is accom plished by first inserting the spring-key in position and then filling the body of the package while the same is in inverted position. The base is then placed over the wider end of the body and the wrapper slipped over the same and closed by pasting the edges. In this manner the wrapper serves as a means for holding the base and spring-key in position, and prevents thereby the escape of any por tion of the contents. When the contents of the package are desired to be used, the upper end of the Wrapper merely is removed, so that access is given to the key. By removing the key and slightly shaking the package while held in inverted position the required quantity of material for use is readily removed from the package. The key is then inserted again for closing the package. When the next quantity has to be removed, the key is then again removed and a small quantity of material removed through the slot at the apex by shaking the package, after which the key is inserted, and this operation is repeated from time to time until the entire contents of the package are used. By the closing of the package a separate snuff-box or other receptacle for the snufi or pulverulent material can be dispensed with, as the package itself forms the dispensing-receptacle, in which the material is kept in moist and fresh condition, as there is no flee ingress of the air into the same.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A package for snuff or other pulverulent material, composed of a pyramidal body having a slotted opening at the apex, a springkey inserted into the slotted apex. a base placed on the Wider end of the body, and a wrapper of corresponding shape extending over the body, base, and key, substantially as set forth.

2. A package for snuff or other pnlverulent articles, composed of a body of pyramidal shape having a slot in its apex, a spring-key inserted into the slot of the apex for closing the same, a base applied to the larger end of the body, and a wrapper made of a shape corresponding to the body and extending over the base-body and a spring-key, said wrapper being provided at some distance from its apex near the point where the spring-keyis located with perforations for permitting the convenient detaching of the apex of the Wrapper When opening the package, substantially as set forth.
