Description
TEMPORARY BINDER.
N.175,328. Patented March 28,1876.
NFETERB, FHDTO-LITHOGRAPHEH. WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BEBNABD J. BECK, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YOBK.
- IMPROVEIVIENT IN TEMPORARY BINDERS.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,328. dated March 28, 1876; application filed I l June 11,1875.
. Brooklyn, in thecountyof Kings and Stateof New York, haifeinvented an Improvement in Temporary Binders, ofqwhich the following is a specitication .y
. Files for letters 'and papers and sheetsl for scrap-books have been made with a strip of thick paper attache'dtothe back edge thereof,
and through such .strips there have beenholes perforated for thelcerds or other ,connecting devices. In these Cases there is diculty in relnovin g one or more' of the sheets, especially inthe middle portions of the book ot' leaves, because the -leaves upon one side or theother have to be unthrleaded from the cords or strings.
My improvement ismade for the purpose Jot'allowingV anysheet to Vbe removedl and of folded sheets, the strips o't' pasteboard. or thick l paper are fastened, as at b. This strip bl isn pasted upon the surfaceof the sheet at the back, orthe additional strength and thickness areobtained by'folding` the back edge of the sheet, or by attaching the strip b to the sheet a by a strip of muslin, or in any other known way. Fig. 3 is a section of the strip inclosed in a fold of the sheet a.
Each sheet and strip at the back edgeis cut sheets together,
slots for the binding cords or strings with two or more L-shaped slots the portions of the slots that are parallel, orxfnearly' so, to the back ends extend toward orf away from each other, in order that cordsy'or strings in such portions ot' the slots may prevent the sheets separating accidentally, or `falling out.
. The .covers d e are preferably united'together by a flexible back,f, and the cords or strings it', two or more in number, are Iattached at the innerand back edges of the cover, preferably to hoks l l, made as described in Amy patent N' o. 153,526, and hence after the sheets are packed together, and the cordsv inserted into the respective L-shaped slots, the covers can be tightened to the book by drawing the cords through the hooks upon the edges of the cover and fastening them, and it asheet is to be added at any portion of the book, or one removed, it is only necessary to open the le at the proper place, slacken up Vthe cords, draw them through suciently to slip them outvof or into the L shaped slots, and ythen tighten up the cords as aforesaid.
This binder is very strong and convenient, both for filing letters, zpapers, and scraps, and the book can be added to from time to time until the maximum number of sheets is inserted.
I claim as my invention- 'Ihe sheets for a i1e-binder with L-shaped eut in the back edges of the detached sheets or strips, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by ine this 8th day of June, A. D. 1875.
