To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JEssE F. TAPLEY,0H11G city, county, and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Binding Cards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in fastening or binding together a number of sheets or cards of paper or other material, so as to make a book that will lie perfectly flat on the table when opened at any part thereof, said method furnishing a convenient means of binding together Christmas and other cards, photographs, maps, and other stiff sheets; and the invention consists, first, of a method of binding cards or sheets together so as to form a book by slitting or perforating the cards or sheets near their edges at one or more points, passing ribbons or tapes through said slits or perforations, and binding off said ribbons or tapes between two adjoining sheets by winding a cord or thread around said ribbons or tapes, and a transverse re-enforcing band or strip.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a book of cards or other sheets bound together by my improved method. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of one of the cards, showing the slits near one edge thereof. Fig. 3 is a top view of the book shown in open position. Figs. 4;, 5, and 6 are respectively a side view, a detail end view, and a detail vertical transverse section on line :v m, Fig. 5, of the book, drawn on a larger scale and illustrating different steps of my improved method of binding cards or other 1 sheets together.

The cards a are provided near one edge with one or more slits or perforations, a, through which the fastening ribbons or tapes I) b are passed. After or while the sheets are strung up on the ribbons or tapes a number of supplemental leaves are inserted between each pair of adjoining sheets a, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 4. The supplemental leaves are of the same size as the cards a a, and serve to fold the ribbons or tapes so as to be in line with the edges of the cards a and hold the folds of the ribbon or tape in this position, which is accomplished by jogging all the sheets together toward that edge at which they are to be united. Thesupplemental leaves are then removed and the perforated sheets pressed firmly together, so that the ribbons or tapes are creased between the sheets. When this is accomplished, astiff reenforcing band or strip, d, of leather or other suitable material, is placed transversely over each ribbon h at the back of the book, and a cord or thread, 0, one end of which is securely The invention consists, secondly, of a book 5 of cards or other sheets, which are slitted or fastened to one of the outermost sheets, is then wound, by means of a curved needle, over the band (I, and under the folds of the ribbons or tapes between each pair of adjoining sheets, and drawn tight, so as to fasten the folds of the ribbons to the baud (Z (l, and form thereby a hinge connection for each card. orshect, whereby the book may be opened at any portion and placed flat on the table or other support. The ends of the transverse bands (1 (Z are ce-- mcnted or otherwise fastened to the outermost cards or covers, if such are used. The ends of the ribbons b b may be carried back over the rc-en forcing bands and the bindingoff threads and fastened to the opposite outside sheet, so as to cover thereby the bands (Z and threads 0, if desired; or they maybe cut off and cemented to the outside sheets under the bands or cemented over the ends of the bands and cut off, as desired.

The method of binding described is spe ciaily adapted to make books of cards or stiff sheets, so that they can be opened easily and laid entirely flat, while the binding is strong and durable. The book of cards may be gilt at the edges all around, and may be provided with a cover, if desired, said cover being bound up in the same manner as the sheets by ribbons or tapes or applied to the outer sheets in the manner generally used in book-binding.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The method herein described of binding cards or other sheets together so as to form a book, which consists in slitting or perforating said cards near one edge, passing ribbons or tapes through said slits or perforations, and binding off each card or sheet by winding a cord or thread between each adjoining pair of cards around the ribbon, and additional transverse re-enforcing bands placed over said ribbons, substantially as set forth.

2. The method herein described of binding cards or sheets together,which consists in slitting or perforating said sheets near the edge, passing ribbons or tapes through said slits or perforations, folding said ribbons intermediately between the sheets by means of supple mental leaves interposed between the perforated leaves, and then binding off the sheets by winding a cord or thread around the folded portions of the ribbons and outer re-enforeing bands, and finally fastening the ends of the 1eenforcing band and binding-off cord to the outermost sheets, substantially as set forth.

8. A book of cards or other sheets composed of a number of cards or sheets having slits or perforations near one edge of said cards, ribbons 0r tapes passed through said slits, transverse re-enforcing bands, and a binding-off cord or thread that is wound around the ribbons and reenforeing bands between each pair of adjoining cards or sheets, substantially as set forth.

4. A book of cards or leaves consisting of a number of cards or sheets having slits or perforations at their edges, ribbons or tapes passed through said slits or perforations,transverse re-enforcing bands placed over the ribbons at the edges of the sheets and secured at their ends to the outermost cards, and a binding-off cord or thread that is Wound around the ribbons and bands between each pair of adjoining cards, substantially as set forth.
