IMPROVEMENT IN CU RRV-COMBS.

S ecification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 175.098, dated March 21, 1876 application filed March 15, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HOTOH- KIss, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Curry-Combs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my curry-comb, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modification of my curry-comb, and Fig. 4. is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 are longitudinal vertical sectional views of further modifications thereof.

This invention has relation to curry-combs; and the nature of my invention consists in a curry-comb which is constructed with two independent handles, one of which extends across the back of the comb and serves as a grasping-handle, and the other extends from one side of the comb, as will be hereinafter explained.

Both of the handles above mentioned have wooden surfaces, and the invention is mainly designed as an improvement upon the currycomb for which Letters Patent were issued to me dated December 7, 1875.

In the annexed drawings, Figs. 1 and 2, A designates the back of a curry-comb, to which comb teeth 0 and knockers a are rigidly B designates a strap, which is secured at b to the back of the comb, bent, as shown in Fig. 2, and inserted into one end of a wooden handle or sleeve, D, extending about.one-thirdof the length thereof. This affords a raised support and an attachment for one end of the handle D. C designates a T-shaped support, which may be rigidly secured to the back of the comb, and constructed with two tangs, d d. The tang d enters one on the supporting portion 0, as shown in Fig. 7.

Figs. 3 and 4 show the support B passing partly through the handle or sleeve D, also a tang, d entering this sleeve and the handle E. The support C in this comb (represented by Figs. 3 and 4.) is omitted and lateral braces G are substituted in its stead, which braces extend into the handle E, as indicated by the letter g, and are also secured to eyes h, formed on the end bars of the comb.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have represented currycombs with two independent handles,in which a bar, 0 extends entirely through the handle or sleeve D, and has a tang, 0 formed on it, which enters the side handle E. The comb (represented by Fig. 5) has its two handles, D and E, applied to a single piece, which piece is bent so as to form the tang, two supports, a bar running through the handle D, and a bar running through the comb-plates c beneath the backs thereof.

Fig. S'shows the two independent handles D E, one of which, E, is the side handle, and is fixed to the tangs of two lateral arched braces, G, and the other, D, is the graspinghandle, which is fixed to a bar, 0 that extends entirely through it, and is secured at both ends, by its raised supports, to the comb-frame or back of the comb. The bar 0 in Fig. 8 is represented as inclining from the side handle E toward the opposite side of the comb-frame.

It will be observed that in allof the modifications herein set forth each one of the combs have two separate handles, one of which extends over the back of the comb, and the other extends out from one side of the comb.

The leading improvement, herein shown and described, upon my patent of December 7, 1875, (Case E,) consists in making provision for attaching a wooden handle or sleeve directly over the comb-back, instead of the metallic handle shown in my said patent. This is effected by means of the standard C, constructed with a double tang, and the additional support and tang B 0.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1.
