Description

De L. KENNEDY TRUSS.
No. 174,962, Patente March 21.,1876.
MPETERS. PHOTD-LITKOGRPHER. WASHINETON. D'O.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DE LANOY KENNEDY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,962, dated March 21, 1876; application filed June 16, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concert:
Be it known that I, DE LANGY KENNEDY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have iuvented an Improvemen't in Hernial Trusses, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in swiveling the bows or main Springs of the truss to the front plate, which carries the pad or pads, by pintles which are arranged parallel, or nearly so, with the face or faces of the pad or pads, and
' are themselves transversely pivoted to the bows. By this means a universal joint is provided between the bows and front plate, and, while the pressure remains unimpaired, the adaptabilityof the bows to the body in its various evolutions is much enhanced.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the truss with my improvement applied, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view illustrative of the mode of fastening' the back-Strap of the truss.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
A represents the front plate of the truss, and B B the bows thereof. The plate is a double one, and is made in the usual form. The bows B are likewise of the usual form, save that on the ends which are connected with the front plate they have formed long pivots 8 s. These pass through ring's or bearings b b, provided on the front of the plate,
and are screw-threaded on the ends to fit nuts'` c c, secnred firmly on the plate below the bearings `just mentioned. These bearings and nuts are arranged to be approximately in a line parallel with the face of the pads when attached to the plates. The fixed nuts c c secure the swivels to the plate, while still affording them abundant freedom for turning', and are not liable to be lost, as loose nuts would be. The swivels or pivots 8 8 are crooked sidewise at their upper ends, and there pivoted transversely to the bows by pivots g. as represented at the left hand of Fig. 1. Thus the bows and pads are united by a universal joint, and the adaptability of the truss to the various evolutions of the bodyis much increased, while a uniform pressure is maintained. O is the back-Strap of the truss. It is united with the back-pads and bows in the ordinary manner.
The swiveling of the bows to the plate A in the manner described enables the truss to adapt -itself to the body in all twistings or turnings of the trunk without chafing or irritating the person ofthe wearer. While effecting this the pressure of the pad is constantly preserved.
The jointing of the bows and their swivels s: 8 affords freedom to the body for lateral movement without shifting' the truss.
The invention, thoug'h only represented in connection with a truss having a double front pad, is applicable likewise to t-russes having single pads.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination of the plate A with the bows B by means of the oscillating pintles 8 and their eceentricall yarranged transverse pivot g, as shown and described, for operation substantially as specified.,
DE LANCY KENNEDY.
