GUSTAVE SCHMIDT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
HAMEmTUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 383,151, dated May 22, 1888.
Application tiled September 22, 18d?. Serial No. 250,382. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE SoHMrDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, county ofI-Iamilton, and State ofChio, have invented a certain new and uscfuljmprovementin Hame'Tugs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in hameltugs for fastening a harness-trace to the hames or haine-clip, the novel features of which will be more fully set forth hereinafter'.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, in section', of my improved haine-tug attached to the haine-clip. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the coupling-plate and hameeclip. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the coupling-plate from what' may be called the under side. Fig. 4 is an end view ofthe same.
Like letters of reference indicate identical parts in all the gurcs.
A is an ordinary llame-clip attached to the haines by the loop A. This clip usually consists of two arms of malleable metal. These arms are inserted between the strips of leather of which the tug is made and there riveted. A coupling-plate is sometimes inserted between these arms and fastened by rivets or clamps, and a buckle attached tothe rear end of the plate for fastening the trace.
My improvement consists in the form and application of the coupling-plate B B'. It is adapted to be fastened'to the outside of the haine clip, instead of inserted between the arms. For that purpose the 'forward end, B, is made concave, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to tit down over and around the shorter arm of the clip, which is made of a length to correspond with the concave portion B. This forward end, B, is provided with holes c c and a slot, C. A rivet or screw, I, Figs. land 2, passes through the plate and one or both arms of the clip. It is shown as passing through both. These arms may then be brought as close together as desired. The plate is thus more easily applied and holds more firmly. Additional screws or rivets may be inserted in the slot C. The forward end ofthe plate B is made wide, the sides b b forming wings or bearings which hold the plate tirm and prevent its twisting in the leather, and makes a much ijrmer tug. The forward end of the plate is hollowed out sufficiently to form a shoulder at K, against which the end of the shorter arm, A, may be made to rest. By this construction the outer surface of the plate B is perfectly smooth and unbroken from end to end, all external shoulders being avoided. The wings b Z) act as shoulders to hold the loop M in place. To the rear end of the plate the buckle P is attached by a rivet in the usual wa IIaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. In ahame-tug, the combination of a hameclip, A, and a coupling-plate composed of the portions B and B, the portion B being made concave and with wings b b, and fitted externally upon the arm ofthe llame-clip, whereby their movement laterally with respect to each other is prevented, and a fastening device to hold said parts together, substantially as described.
2. In alr.1ine-tug,tl1e combination ofa hameclip, A, and a coupliugqiilate composed ofthe portions B and B', the portion B being made concave, with wings b b at its side and a shoulder. K, at its rear end, whereby it is adapted to lit externally upon the arm of the hameclip, and a fastening device for holding the parts together, substantially as shown and described.
GUSTAVE SCHMIDT.
