Description

L. J'. EARLL.
SASH-FAS'IENER. -No.174', 501. Patented. March '1, 1876.
WITNESSES N.FETERS, PHOTOYLITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D 04 PATENT LLOYD J. EARLL, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 74,501, dated March 7, 18 76 application filed February 2, 1876.
Be it known that I, LLOYD J. EARLL, of
Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have .invented a new and Improved Combined Sash Lock and Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accom' panying drawing, forming apart of this specification, in .which Figure 1 is a view of one side of the device, showing its application to a window-casing and the socket contained therein Fig. 2, a view of the opposite side of the device. Fig. 3 are different views of a modification of the socket. Fig. 4 is a side view of the catch.
My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of sash-locks which have an arc-shaped head or binding-surface, which bears either against the window-sash or is pivoted to the window-sash and binds against the window-frame, for the purpose of holdingthe window-sash in any desired position.
My invention consists in the combination,
with a continuous band of rubber passing around the quadrant-shaped holder, of a post or stud attached to said holder, around which the rubber band may be passed, to tighten the same whenever it becomes loose from Wear. I
The invention also consists in the combination of a sliding bolt passing through alug on said holder so as to enter a socket of the window-frame, and having a shoulder upon one side, so that when the bolt is in the socket, and turned, it cannotbe withdrawn. The invention also further consists in the particular form of a solid and chambered socket made to receive the bolt, the same being made in and operating with a frictional contact therewith to hold the sash at any desired bright. The holder A is made of metal or other suitable material; and, to prevent abrasion and scratching'of the paint, due to the friction of its curved face with the painted wood-work, I provide it with a continuous flexible band, B, of leather, rubber, leather saturated with a solution ofrubber, or other equivalentmaterial. Said band extends entirely around the outside edges and curved face of the holder, and acts as a cushion to prevent disfiguring the paint. The band is made continuous, so that when one portion becomes worn it may be turned soas to present a new face to engage the frame-work. To prevent the slipping of the band, and to compensate for its looseness resulting from wear, I construct the holder with a recess, 01, and a post or .stud, 6, around which post the loosened bandmay be passed to tighten it. (3 is a lug cast upon one side of the holder, and having a hole through the same, in which slides the bolt D. Said bolt slides into or out from the socket in the window-frame, to lock or unlock the sash. This bolt D is made with one side straight and smooth from end to end, but the other side is provided near its end with a locking-shoulder, j, which, when the bolt is projected into the socket, and turned, binds against the edge gof the lug and prevents the withdrawal of the bolt until turned again. The window-sash is by this means doubly locked, and a much greater security aii'orded against the efforts of burglars. E is a socket, which receives and holds the bolt when the sash is locked. It consists of a wedge shaped piece of metal, which is provided with a hollow head and a flat face, and is driven into the wood-work until the face is flush with the guideway for the sash, in which position it is held without other fastening. Instead of using this wedgeshaped socket, however, other forms may be used, if desirable, such as are shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. I may also use my sash-holding devices separately from the locking devices, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The holder A, having recess (1 and post FFIC'E e.in combination with, continuous flexible band ing a wedge-shaped end, adapted to be driven B, as and for the purpose described. 7 into the wook-work and held in place, for the 2. The holder A, having perforated lug G, purpose described. combined with the bolt D, having a shoulder, LLOYD J. EARLL. f, upon one side, as and for the purpose de- Witnesses:
scribed. W. STREET,
3. The solid and chambered socket E, hav-' JEssmS. OsBOURN.
