UNITED STATES PATENT FFI'CE.
AUGUSTUS REBETEY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-SECURERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,982, dated August 11, 1874; application filed February 21, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS REBETEY, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Safety Attachment for Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my safety attachment to doors, as applied to the lock Fig. 2 a front view, and Fig. 3 a vertical transverse section, ofthe same on the line c c, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
The object of my invention is to furnish to the traveling public, for family or other use, an improved stationary or detachable safety device to doorlocks, by which they may be more securely bolted, in a neat, cheap, and easily-applied manner.
My invention consists of a small face-plate, which is attached to the hasp of the door-lock, either detachably or by screws, to the doorframe, being provided with a sliding crossbolt, which passes through a recess of the face-plate, and has a spring and wire keeper'. The bolt is moved after the door is closed over the lock, and closes rmly thereon by the wedge-like action of a projecting shoulder of the bolt on the outside of the hasp.
In the drawing, A represents the face-plate of the safety attachment, made of any suitable metal and finish. Face-plate A is provided,
under right angles to it, with two parallel shoulders or flanges B, between which the recess a for the sliding-bolt C is arranged. The end of plate A, opposite the outer flange, is rounded olf, and may be made when the attachment is designed for stationary use in dwellings, of sufficient length to be attached by one or two screws to the door-frame, after the inner shoulder B has been placed against the inner-surface of the door-hasp, as shown in Fig. l. Y
When it is intended to be used by travelers, in hotels, &c., the device is applied detachably, being carried along, as its small shape takes up but little room. Y
The wedgeshaped sliding cross-bolt C is retained by a wire-keeper, b, on face-plate A, a small triangular groove, a', serving to take up keeper b on drawing the bolt C sidewise, to allow the passage of the door along the face-plate without the slightest obstruction. A band-spring, d, is attached to the grooved cross-bolt, its free-forked end passing along keeper b and pressing on the outer flange B, which secures the firm adherence of theV faceplate to the door-hasp until the door is closed. The outer end of cross-bolt C has a handleshaped forward-projecting arm, e, to which keeper b is fastened, and a projection or shoulder, f, extending toward the hasp.
The safety device is used in the following manner: The face-plate is applied by the inner flange and the spring to the hasp, the door being open at the time. The door is then closed and the sliding bolt carried forward over the lock as far as the rear shoulder or projection of the same admits. This shoulder passes along the outside ofthe hasp to or nearly up to the rim of the same, and throws the bolt with wedge-like pressure on the lock, forming a strong, neat. and simple safety device to the same, by resisting any attempt to open the door from the outside.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A safety attachment for door-locks, consisting of recessed face-plate A, with rectan gularflan ges B, wedge-shaped cross-bolt G, bandspring d, and keeper b, the whole constructed and applied toadoor-lock, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of keeper b, bolt C, and spring d, in the manner described, to cause retention of attachment on the hasp previous to closing the door. y
