IMPROVEMENT m SCHOOL-DESKS.

is a transverse vertical sectional view thereof My invention relates to that class of schooldesks having movable arms, which arexat tached to the top of the standards in such a manner as to permit the top being folded down against the back, over the book-boxyand it consists in providing the desk-top arm with recesses or covered slots and a shoulder, in

combinationwith a'pintle and stop, and also in providing the slots around the pintles with cushions, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. i

In the annexed drawing, A A represent the usual side pieces, B the back, and O the desktop. This desktop is secured on two arms, D D, the inner ends of which are enlarged, as shown, to admit of an elongated recess or slot, a, being formed therein. In this enlarged part of the arm isa curved recess, 1), with shoulder or offsetat d, which bears against the front face of the stop i when the top of the desk is raised, thereby supporting-it when in use. By raising the desktop bodily the pintles it slide in the elongated recesses or slots at, enabling the offsets d to clear the stops 1;, when the desktop can be readily closed. The recesses bin the arms D are necessary, so'that no obstruction will be presented to the stopsz' in closing the desk. In each side piece-A is a projecting pintle, h, to enter the slot or recess a, and also a projecting stop, 2', to work in the recess b.

Ordinarily, in this class of school-desks, the slots for the pintle and. stop are out entirely through the arm, which often causes the person operating the desk-top to get the fingers caught therein, also weakening it thereby. This is entirely obviated by covering these slots on the outside, or, in other words, so

constructing the arm that the slots are not cut entirely through, but simply recesses formed on the inner side, which also makes the arm present a neat appearance.

In the recess a, around the pintle h, is inserted a cushion, m, which prevents or lessens the noise occasioned in using the lid.

On the shoulder or oifset d is also fastened a cushion, n; or this cushionmaybe attached to the stop i, if so desired. The cushions m and n are simply for the purpose of preventing noise, and may be of metal or of non-metallic substance,as may/be deemed most advantageous for the purpose designed. 7

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1'. The desk-top arm D, formed with recesses or covered slots a b and shoulder 01, in combination with the pintle h and stop 13, substantially as and for the purpose set-forth.

2. The cushion m, inserted in the recess a on thearm I), around the pintle h, for the purpose set forth.
